Alright, the software you need is called "Nikon Camera Control Pro" (Trial available here)

Once it is installed connect the camera via the cables you normally use and open the software. It should find the camera and from there you can control almost all the functions and you can see the information you would see if you looked through the lens. Only takes about 3-5 seconds from shutter press (or button press) to viewing it on computer and thats with my slow USB cable and full res RAW files.

A problem I had was that the camera was not recognized by the program. I fixed it by going into the camera menu, scrolling down to the wrench and changing the USB option from Mass Storage to PTP.

I was going to tell you that answer also. This is also the same app you can use to load a custom curve into the camera

Is there a way to do this with another camera and a Mac?
