One day my cousin teach me this "joke" in a public internet place...
Hide all windows and leave just the Desktop, press the key next to F12 to take screenshots and save it as JPEG file.
Set that file as wallpaper as you usually do.
Now, right click the desktop, and deselect the hightlighted option (sorry, my computer is in spanish

):

Now try to open the icons
Be sure to stay some time to watch someone becoming crazy with it

This trick is as old as the first version of Windows that supports wallpapers. Did it on Windows 3.11 lol.

Ha ha that very funny thing to do
on windows 9x you could create a folder with the null character in the name (alt+255) and it would look like a _ and then you couldn't delete it except by using command prompt and you'd have to know it had a null character in it, anyway. basically you could make a folder called something like "bdsm_animal_porn" or something embarrassing like that but have a null character instead of one or both the _s and it'd be practically undeleteable. sadly xp/2k's (and possibly nt's) unicode support is much betterand fixes this bug.
Like to tease?!! Try this one,..
These reg files swap the Computer Icon on the Desktop with a fake one.
The Open command (left click) performs a Message Beep.
The Explore command swaps the mouse buttons (you can undo it in the Buttons tab @ Mouse Properties).
The Manage command opens a Format Windows dialog box (XP) or a Restart Dialog (Vista).
The properties command gives an Installation failed error (because it installs nothing).
Install: Merge MyCompXP.reg or MyCompVista.reg and refresh the Desktop (Right Click and select Refresh).
Uninstall: Merge MyComp-.reg and refresh the Desktop.

did this to a house mate few weeks back, while he was out of the room, he came back and started clicking and then i heard wtf? he was just about to reboot when i burst in and said HAHA! fooled you

off topic, i also hid in his closet and jumped out scaring the crap outta him and put one of his shoes on top of his door so when he opened it it fell on his head....ah good times. childish but harmless fun, although i did end up with bruised arm and he threw the shoe at me lol.

Me and a buddy did this to about 5-10 computers at my highschool with a message in command prompt saying that they messed up their computer and to leave it till after class when we went in and removed the command prompt part
I did it before and it went back to normal I didn't know how it went back to normal. What do you press to get it back to normal?
Done that back in school in the days of Windows 3.11!! hilarious watching what people do trying to use the computer

good memories

I always make a point of doing the fake icon trick on all the laptops in our local Toys'R'Us , you should see the so called 'Technical Support' guys in there trying to figure out WTF is going on , hilarious

I did this with an OS/2 desktop as background agaist a Win 3.1 desktop. Minimise progman, and you have all sorts of fun (people trying to start OS/2 apps).
Another fun trick is to hide live icons on the desktop, on top of their image, so it does not look like it's stuffed. A minimised taskbar at the top does wonders if the taskbar is clear at the bottom.

Why save as BMP when you have lossless PNG?

JPEG is better to save larger files ^^
But if you are using paint... PNG should be better...
