Hello,

For some time, I've been looking to get into photography.
I enjoy taking scenery shots and I'm very interested in taking Night Shots - I always find these great motives for shots when i walk around at night.

But since I'm a complete amateur photographer, i have always used a low-budget camera from some Supermarket.
As you might know, such cameras are pants at taking night shots without a 500w light-bulb.

So now i wanna get a decent quality camera that's "cheap" ... By cheap i mean a user camera, not these £2,500 cameras.

Only one I've been looking at so far is the "Canon EOS 400D (Canon EF-S-objektiv, 18-55 mm)" Which is a bit out of my budget, but i can manage.

Are there any better options for me in this price range - Perhaps a cheaper camera with all the features i need but less expensive.

Also, anyone know where i can find some pictures taken with the camera linked above - I really wanna see it in action ( All I'm going by is recommendations )

Any help appreciated!

Thanks.

Nikon D50 with 18-55mm if you can get it. I use it, i love it.

And if that's still too expensive: Fuji S6500fd (which gets pretty close to dSLR quality if you shoot raw (downsides:13MB files, ~5 seconds between shots) and use s7raw+neatimage)

Was just looking at my local D50 prices - It's actually more expensive.

But there aren't any comments on the Camera i posted?

We're waiting for the Canonites to tell you it's the greatest camera ever.

Actually you can hardly go wrong with any dSLR.

The 400D is an excellent camera. If you have the money, go for it! smile.gif

I'm also eyeing the XTi/400D. I had the opportunity to use one with the kit lens, and it was very nice. But, don't rely on the kit lens for indoor shots (e.g. a party); the slow aperture range wreaks havoc on low-light shots.

However, you'll usually use a tripod for night photography, so I wouldn't say that's such a big deal.

For many scenery/landscape shots, you'll want a wide lens to go with the camera.

Since the XTi is a DSLR, it's designed to be used with other lenses. They do run up the cost: the EF-S 10-22 goes for about $640; wide off-brand lenses go for about $450. And that's in addition to the camera's price. But, you won't necessarily need another lens. If you can use the kit lens well, more power to you smile.gif

have you looked at Nikon D40? Here's a comparison of the Canon 400D vs Nikon D40

There's hardly any difference between the two, and the Nikon is a bit cheaper.

Also, 2 things to keep in mind about SLR's:

1 - Don't spend more money for more megapixels. Anything beyond 6 megapixels is simply a waste for anyone who doesn't make a living from photography.

2 - If you really want to get into photography, and be able to produce professional-looking images, then be prepared to spend extrodinary amounts of money on equipment. To give you an idea, my camera originally cost me roughly $500....a year later my collection of equipment is over $3000. I don't regret a bit of it, because they are all useful. Just know that this can become a very serious (albeit worthwhile) hobby.
