I just got my new system with Windows Vista on it and I'm pretty impressed with a few exceptions. I'm pretty minimalistic, and I've taken out a lot of the stuff in the start menu (ie, the music folder, documents folder etc.. as it's all in my user folder anyways). Now I have this big gap between the bottom of my start menu and my recent programs (2 programs) where there is nothing. In Windows XP it would automatically resize the start menu so that there was no gap. Is there any simple solution to this?

Or possibly make the icons on the left hand portion bigger? I already have "Use large icons" ticked in the Start Menu prefs.

From what i can see its because you have the number of recent programs being shown to be about 7 or so. To change it, right click on the orb, click properties. Then the customize button and change the number of recent programs to display. Hope that works.

I'm guessing it's so when you go All Programs it doesn't look squished.
