I think you can do a few of the functions winamp offers in Songbird.

You can try Cog, but you're not gonna find much. iTunes was hard for me as well (coming from foobar), but you get used to it.

Coda

Real men use TextMate! tongue.gif

For Mac OS X you need a browser with an Anti-Phishing because it's an important security tool. You could use Firefox or something else.
PaulCabby
Are there any programs on os x that is like tag & rename? just a dedicated program to filling out all id3 tags because i can't seem to find one that can replace it atm sad.gif because it feels slow doing it through itunes

You can try Jaikoz or Simple Tagger.

agreed with these. delicious library is incredibly powerful, the iSight UPC barcode scanner is amazing. and the other two speak for themselves.
Cadium
The following is a list of applications that I have installed on my MacBook Pro:
  • Adium 1.3 - The best instant messenger on the Mac platform just got better with improved protocol support and better memory management. Free!
  • CandyBar 3 - An excellent application to manage a library of custom icons and docks. Changing the icons on your Mac is dead simple. $29.
  • Transmit 3 - A really impressive and easy-to-use FTP client.
  • Pixelmator - Image editing for the rest of us, Pixelmator can perform most functions of Photoshop with ease and supports Quartz Composition rendering. At $59, it's a great deal.
  • TextMate - A text editor on steroids, with tab completion, bundles, and so much more. And it's only €39!
  • iWork '08 - Keynote, Numbers, and Pages do a great job at every day productivity tasks and is a lot easier on the pocketbook than a license for Microsoft Office.
  • VLC Media Player - For watching audio and video formats that QuickTime does not support. Free!
  • Xcode - For developing applications for the Mac and iPhone platforms, including Dashcode for creating Dashboard widgets and iPhone/iPod touch web applications, Quartz Composer for creating quartz compositions (iTunes visualizers, screen savers, etc), and of course the Xcode IDE. Also includes a ton of great examples and other tools. Ships with every Mac on the Mac OS X installation DVD, and downloadable for free from the Apple Developer web site.

And, the applications that I used previously that I decided to remove:

  • Cyberduck - A good FTP client, but having to switch back and forth between the Finder and Cyberduck for uploading files was a bit of a pain, and the way that it handles spring-loaded folders on the servers is a bit odd.
  • TextWrangler - An excellent text editor, but was lacking some of the things I required for development purposes. I still highly recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful text editor for the Mac platform on the cheap.

You know, I've always liked BBEdit when compared to TextMate and Smultron. Has anyone else tried BBEdit 9? It's quite nice, and isn't too expensive, either. I don't know if it's "essential," but I'd like to add it to the list anyway.
sn00pie
The only thing keeping me from using Adium, is I don't seem to be able to access my hotmail inbox from it, and when I get new email it didn't alert me, so I removed it and use MSN for Mac. The MSN for Mac is garbage, it doesn't support offline messages, and doesn't show handwriting messages either. hmm.gif
thetman
Plex - an OS X port of XBMC with a nice interface.

Feel free to contribute and I'll add them to the categories. Most, if not all of these software should be Universal for PPC and Intel compatibility.
[*]Growl - system wide notification system extensible to many different applications - Free

Growl is great - especially when Chax is installed and sending IM notifications. There are more settings than some know about, which can be found here
Tripps
I would like to also point out Photomatrix Pro as a great piece of software.... Excellent if you're into photography and want to play with HDR imagery.

Growl - very nifty program.

Is there a program that works as like a Phone Manager solution? My bluetooth phone will accept and receive files from my Macbook but it will not send files to my Macbook. hmm.gif

I just got myself a MacBook two days ago (who would've ever thought) and I am trying to figure out why Java is so slow and sometimes unresponsive with Firefox but works fine with Safari.

FOr example, I attempt to run Scottrader from scottrade.com and it takes 2-3 minutes to load and it is really slow. If I run it under Safari it runs perfect.

Any ideas?
Wannes
Coda is a great application worth mentioning for people in need of webdesign applications.

@Lethal: No idea man. I have no problems with the Java on Firefox here. The loading takes a while but no 3 minutes.

Hehe . . . actually if you want to run Windows exclusively I don't think you need Bootcamp, even. Just install Windows as you normally would.

But I don' think you can then go and dual boot OS X once you've done that. Correct me if I'm wrong . . .

Hmm... I think you're right. If you delete the partition that holds Mac OS X, the only way to be able to re-install it would be to run Mac OS X from an external drive, run Disk Utility and then recreate a partition...

I was thinking about doing this once but decided not to since you need Mac OS X to install computer firmware updates.

After few days on my Mac, I found:

Journler- A powerful, cheap, complete note taking, organizer, program.
Wile it's not strong as MSFT OneNote 2007, it's quite good for a replacement.
Good app for a student.
http://journler.com/

Sidenotes
- A small multi quick-note taking program.
It hide on the side of the screen and it's useful when having quick notes to write.
It support text and pictures drag-n-drop as well.
http://www.chatelp.org/?page_id=5

Desktopia- A wall paper changer that you set to change walls according the time of the day
http://www.chatelp.org/?page_id=6

Butler- I didn't play with it yet, but it's a VERY strong app
It's hard to explain all the features it have, so just check it out
http://www.manytricks.com/butler/

Plainview- a FullScreen Webkit browser
For the fullscreen lover or people that make presentations of webpages (Designers will fall in love with this)
http://www.barbariangroup.com/software/plainview_app_1_0

MultiClutch- A very useful PrefPane for all MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and L08 MacBook owners
It allow to change the behavior of the multitouch gestures for different functions
Changes can be Global or you can add any Cocoa Apps (Carbon isn't supported) to make app specific commands.
(Unfortunately it don't support the 4 fingers Gestures yet)

BTW, Opera have a MacOSX version you know?
Why it's not in the list?

I agree, I used TextWrangler before and when I tried out TextMate I was blown away, I absolutely love it.

We should add openoffice to the list, as it is now native for Mac OS.

Thanks for the list, will check out some of the apps.

I'm in need of a reliable VNC client, which is also free... Anyone?
Quillz
BBEdit recently released 9.0 and it's quite nice. I write all sorts of documents with it. For some websites that require character spacing of 79 characters or less, it's ideal.

Really? I find Safari much faster at loading pages, navigating.

Plus Glims and Inquisitor make it much more usable.

Eversave autosaves any program you want. Especially helpful for iWork (which doesn't do it on its own)

new to the Mac. Got it last night, and must say thanks for the list.

Going from a life long windows user to a mac isn't HUGE as far as I am excited as hell, but scared because I have absolutely no idea what I am doing smile.gif

It was daunting for me at first. Just remember that the Apple key takes over pretty much all functions from the CTRL key in Windows. I also recommend you look at several apple blogs for essential information and tips.

One less button to worry about wink.gif

Well unless you got a mouse with two buttons, or their mightymouse with fake two buttons or use a trackpad with two fingers and a click or ctrl-click.

Performance of that is absolute cack on my Macs.

Use this one instead:

It will pop up and ask for details but you don't have to enter any. Then you can download the enterprise mac viewer for free.

Hazel is an excellent utility.

Not sure I've seen it mentioned: SimplyBurns - 'SimplyBurns is a Mac OS X application with a GUI, which allows the user to burn CD / DVD media.'
