After over a year of work, Neowin's own Shift Linux 0.5 (RC-1) is released to the masses. Shift Linux is a Live CD based on Debian Etch and Morphix. Please feel free to download and test this distro, as well as post bugs in our bug tracking area.

Window Managers
I'll download the Fluxbox version, I always liked the simplicity of Flux!
Also (don't mean to troll) however am I the only one that finds it ironic for a Windows enthusiast site with it's own Linux distribution? Maybe I've been missing out on the general ambiance of Neowin as of late (since I keep up with the postings through RSS feeds) and Neowin is continuing it's growth into more than just a Windows enthusiast site. Well, it is but this kind of makes you think about it and assert that fact.

Neowin has been a great place for "technology enthusiasts" to hang out. While Windows is a lion's share of the desktop market, there are other technologies out there that garner a good degree of interest. In addition to the Windows sections, there are Linux and Apple sections here, as well.

Actually, it is still doing the "download" part, but will be seeding them in a few hours (based on the estimated time reported).

now don't get upset about this question but...
aside from this being a "community" version of Linux, what exactly does shift linux offer that any other distro doesn't?

It's been answered before, so I guess it won't hurt for me to answer it one more time.
This is primarily a learning experience for those involved. Even with my minimal involvement, I have picked up a few things and have tried new items (though, frankly, my kids' football schedules keep me from getting too involved).
Also, when Ubuntu was first announced, the reaction was pretty much the same "why another distro?". Having a Shift Linux doesn't hurt anything, and if a few people enjoy the learning process, so be it.

Aug 24 2007, 01:46
ok then, why not really brand it and make it look like a Neowin themed based distro?
Neowin based icons, wallpaper etc.. why stick to the old boring stuff that's been done before...

Guys, I just realized something. In the Flux version, we don't have a file manager or at least it's not in the menu (I didn't check much). We should add in PCManFM or Rox or something in the next version

I suggest a new thread of things we need in Shift 0.5 final. Krueger, I'm compiling a list, and have added PCManFM or Rox for the next version! Guess we forgot those!

Right, that is why this is
RC-1. We appreciate all of the suggestions and bugs, so we can iron them out before November (our final release).

Have you tried the torrents? I am seeding, as well as a few others, I see.
Got it via torrents. I don't know enough about Linux OS's to see a difference to any of them.
