Shift Linux 0.5 RC-2 Released
Shift Linux is a project that was created by the Neowin community. Shift is Debian based, therefore it has access to all of the software and applications as other Debian distributions. Neowin's Shift Linux is designed to give the user an experience of being part of the Neowin community as well as having a simple, easy-to-use Live CD that can be installed to your hard drive, if you enjoy the way our distribution works. Shift is a free, GPL-based Linux distribution that can be freely distributed or modified. There are no restrictions with Shift.
Shift Linux 0.5 (RC-2) includes three fully branded versions: KDE, Gnome, and Flux, all Live CDs. Included in this version are most of the most popular packages to include wireless support and a desktop installer. In addition, we have newly created packages such as:
1. k3b (All versions)
2. Rhythmbox (All versions)
3. Bluetooth Support (All versions)
4. HP Printer Drivers (All versions)
5. Power management and laptop detection (All versions)
6. NTFS Read/Write support (All versions)
7. Envy (All versions)
8. New branding!
9. Extremely fast...You'll forget it's a CD in 5 minutes.
Feel free to download and try our newest release. It has been designed for increased loading speeds. Please post any bugs found in our

Hi everyone. I'm pretty much a total newb when it comes to Linux (yes, I'm used to Windows), but I like the looks of this version, and I have "messed around" with a few of the linux distributions in the past.
Which version of the three is the best for a newb like me?

It depends on what Desktop Environment you prefer, I guess. I never found Gnome a good fit for me, and used to prefer KDE. The past few years, I have been 100% fluxbox, and would not want to go back to a KDE/Gnome environment.
Is there a torrent being set up, so I can help seed?

We plan on creating a 64-bit edition, but this CD ran fine on my 64-bit AMD2. Try it out.....

**And we need some Fluxbox edition screen shots if anyone is running that now.........

Fluxbox screen shots here:
http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a116/kre...hift/flux05rc2/Edit: I only got 3 for now because I'm running in qemu and it's slow as hell. I don't know what's wrong with this program lately but it's making everything slow even with ram set to 512mb. I'll have to load these into VMWare or Virtualbox for a better experience. Anyway here's the
linkEdit 2: Okay after running it in Virtualbox, which was nice and fast I added 2 more screenshots. You may notice they look different because I changed the GTK theme to clearlooks as it looks better and I wanted to show that it could be done so people don't have to see the ugly default theme

Hey, just to let you guys know, the root password is "root". Simple enough huh? I suggest burning CD's and actually trying this out, a virtual machine only goes so far!

The password can be set if you open a terminal and use
CODE
sudo passwd
hit enter and then type your new password.

And, DaViD_BRaNDoN, I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but gcc, make, automake, autoconf, gdb, and libc6-dev are included. No Java development tools, but if it's GPL, we'd look into including it.
i think he means the JDK, the JDK is now GPL

Whyever all those ppl want KDE - I'd still prefer the lightweight Fluxbox.

Thanks for the release, it's good to see that there's another Debian based distribution made by users, not by money-making companies. I'll see it I get time to do sth with it.

For a newbie, what is recommended? Gnome? KDE? Flux?
Those are UIs, right? Sorry, total newbie here to Linux.
th3rEsa
Sep 11 2007, 19:11
Those are UIs, yes...
KDE is very much Windows-like, so most ppl with enhanced Linux experience consider it bloated.
Fluxbox is sort of a "KDE light", but older (afaik), and GNOME is sth completely different...
See kde.org and gnome.org.
Kreuger
Sep 11 2007, 19:17
Flux is not KDE light in any sense what so ever. It's completely different. Gnome is more similar to KDE than Fluxbox is.
markjensen
Sep 11 2007, 19:30
Yeah. Fluxbox is very minimal. No desktop icons. No "control panel" for system properties. No "start menu" on the desktop, you right-click and get your menu there.
And the origins of the *box Window Managers may be 'older' than KDE, but that doesn't mean *boxes are obsolete or use 'old code'.

^ Linux is designed to run on any Pentium processor. However, if you have a lower level CPU, or a minimum amount of RAM (64 MB is the lowest reasonable amount.... and that is pushing it) then you should opt for Fluxbox. That desk manager is designed for low resource computers.

I've been a neowin user and fan for long time, but couldn't participate in the Shift Linux drive that you guys have been running... I had seen it when you guys were running the logo competition... I've also been an active Linux contributor at SuSE... Hoping to be part of team to build the next version, if you guys have room!!
Just buzz me, when you have the next build starting!! Will be downloading, working and will give feedback on this one for the moment!!

I posted this in the thread on the front page yesterday. No replies and I didn't notice the link on that page to here, so I'm postin it here now.
Man, I just couldn't wait. Have to admit, I'm trying this on this old a** raggedy box I mentioned above, but I just downloaded and burned the iso. Went to try the live cd, and there was that message I've gotten on this machine with EVERY Linux distro I've tried on here as it's booting up:
You have passed an undefined paramater something or other and I never get to a desktop.
Don't have another computer on, at the moment, to start searching for answers, and don't remember/know the commands off the top of my head to do anything with it. I know it's the video. I have Intel integrated 82810 chip.
What do I need to do to get this thing off the ground, so I can start playing/re-learning this distro, so I can be ready to pretend to know what I'm doing when the final release comes out? I'm attempting to use the Flux version.
Thank you
^ Thanks for the nice response. We are trying to make this distro the very best there is! I hope that we do not disappoint you.
