Full Version: Neowin Mobile updated (for iPhone)
Neowin Forums > Announcements > Neowin Site Announcements
Neobond
Blackice (Brad Butner) has returned to the coder team after an extended leave due to work constraints with gifts!

www.neowin.net now redirects automatically when accessed from a handheld device such as a PDA, XDA or Smartphone, this has also been extended to the iPhone and Blackice and Timan have joined forces to bring extended iPhone specific capabilities to the mobile version.

iPhone is detected automatically and that version is displayed. We plan on adding more features for the iPhone and Neowin Mobile in the near future.

http://mobile.neowin.net still works but http://www.neowin.net should redirect automatically now on a mobile device.

Weird, cause I thought iPhone/touch could run Neowin natively?

It can, but why not create an integrated version much like other sites have for the iPhone? It makes the overall experience much more user friendly. Also as Neobond said, we've got more plans for it. Some which I am looking forward to working on over the next week.

How it look? (Well, from an iPhone...)

I'll look into that.

cool, posting from my treo right now

Can't smartphones be delivered the iPhone version too? It seems silly to be brought to the mobile page and not see news right away. I have to first select a category and then see the news.

I see the news right away, from the "main" category. I'm using a Palm TX.

Works fine on my 16GB ipod touch biggrin.gif

Is there any way to post a screener of what neowin would look like on an iPhone? Just curious.

Your phone is displaying the original mobile page. The detection script determined you should see that one.

However, I will look at updating it so it shows the main news right off the bat like the other version does.

Yeah, I think I have an image of it. Give me a minute to find it.

Correction: I do not have an image of the new design on an iPhone. Only pre-release designs.

That's fine. Thanks anyway!

I wish it had a separate URL and did not auto-detect.

I don't seem to get a BPN Link on my HP Ipaq HX2490 (IE)
Zirus
YES! I have been hoping for something like this. I noticed it the other day when I was on neowin with my PPC-6800 (mogul).

Thanks for this! it makes browsing Neowin much easier.

It does have a separate URL - mobile.neowin.net

I have a Blackjack using PIE. I don't see why the script should direct me to that site. All the mobile sites I visit (most in the Engadget network) direct you to the main pain which lists all front page news articles. It doesn't seem efficient directing any browser to a page where they have to click through to get to any kind of content.

The Blackjack isn't running WM6, is it? If it's not, then that would be why it sent you to the original mobile page.

But as I said, I shall look into updating that mobile page so it has the same general layout of the new mobile page (news sections on top, front page news below it).

I'm seeing the pc version of the site on my iPhone. I don't see the iPhone specific site.

This would be due to me not finishing it yet. I had it done, but then I came up with a better idea and scrapped the original. The wait will be worth the features. smile.gif

I have redirection turned off for the iPhone until then.

Want to donate a PSP for development research? ;-)

So when you go to mobile.neowin.net on your PSP, does it look really bad? And if so, what version of the mobile site? The old one has no news when you first load it. The new one shows news and categories when you first load it.
KeR
so will it be www.neowin.net/iphone ?

It will still be mobile.neowin.net. Your browser type will then be detected and the correct mobile page will load.
blackice912
Ok iPhone users: http://mobile.neowin.net

I still have to add some stuff (such as Back Page News), but the overall coding is done.

For those of us without an iPhone who use a Mac, you can use iPhoney:

When you click on an article, the screen slides to the left to show the content (I can't get a screenshot to show that, though)

And yes, comments! Wewt!

Thanks blackice912! I don't have an iPhone and you are still my hero!
CrimsonRedMk
Awesome....I can't wait to get my iPod Touch even more now!

I found a bug without even using the iphone w00t.gif

anyway with my comment that you can see i used a "<" with text after it and it appears to have stripped that away.

And why arn't you putting your name on the about page, some other coderators have done it on their neowin projects.

Blaine
Wow this is just awesome on my iPhone. Will this ever be set at the main page for iPhones?
ahfunaki
ahh, awesome...thanks!

Looks good on N95.

I just hope the devs don't focus too much on the iPhone one and forget about most of the world with other devices.
