I made myself my own home made light tent following these instructions:
http://digital-photography-school.com/blog...ive-light-tent/ My overall cost was about $10-12. The box was free.
It's pretty cool! I still need to get the proper lighting, so that the white bristol board is a lot brighter/whiter (I didn't process these at all, just straight from camera; im too lazy right now).

my cat decided to help

here's some samples!

Neat, this would be good for selling items on ebay and stuff
So that's how those kinds of shots are (cheaply) done. Neat!

you should try doing the same thing, but using ultra bright leds, without that lamp its even cheaper

I made one myself a while back, a coca-cola can box + 4a paper and baking paper for the side filters and they sort of turned out ok.

What's it's name? Mine is mittens. My friend has a cat that looks just like mine, who is also named Mittens.

Probably. But typically people just use back drops + 3 or so lights.

mines name is weasel. I'll get a pic for ya tomorrow.
About the light tent....try using a black background for some interesting effects, plus if you want to shoot jewelry, a black background will make it look like it's just floating there, like a zales commercial. Good work making your own though...Light tents aren't that expensive, you can find them for under 100$, but making your own can save you a ton of money, and that can be used towards nicer things....like a ball head for your tripod mmmmmmmmm

Yea i got a piece of black bristol board to put in there for that very purpose

Looka like i have a holiday project

Someone mentioned using LEDs i think...question about that
Wouldnt that make it a little more difficult to evenly light the box?
If not...it would be neat to buy three bread boards (top/ and two sides) and wire them up with white LEDs, also add in some red/blue/green LEDs which could be toggled, maybe some UV ones too. I have a little chip i can program so i can adjust brightness and whatnot of leds, not sure how many it could handle though

Well you dont need them to be even, depending on the effect you want. from memory this one (http://p858snake.deviantart.com/art/Picture-a-Week-Week-06-64227897) only has a fluro desk lamp shining from Right Front corner of the box.

Hay, some of those are pretty good! Humn... I think you should cut down the depth of field though. The white will look good when you level the colors.

Great idea Cazzy88ss
Like skyyPunk said this would be a great project for the holidays Crazzy what lens did you use this might be the perfect reason for me to get the Canon macro lens I’ve been thinking about getting my wide angle might not work to great for this.

They're shot at 1.8 with his 50mm so the DOF is pretty slim. A stylistic choice but I'd stop it down further to increase the sharpness.

Now are you guys doing PP when uploading these? I would like to see pre and post PP to see how much WB work was done. I tried doing a Customer WB on mine and it did not come up with pure white, but at least makes it easier to put in Light room.
crazzy88ss
Jan 14 2008, 04:48
I didn't really edit mine. I KNOW I didn't do any WB editing.
To get the whitest, you need a longer exposure. Try setting your camera to Spot Mettering.

I've made one (cut out the box and got some lamps) but I've still got to find some sheets to cut up, I've found some nice cardboard to use as a backdrop.

This is fabulous. Perfect for my need.
I've been playing with the light tent / lightbox thing too recently, pretty good fun. What I have found is lighting, sure, proper studio lighting would be nicer (wait, while you're at it, a proper studio would be nice too), but I've had good results out of a pair of 500W halogen lamps. The downside, they're yelllllllllow, and they're hot. But they're bright. Very bright. I've found with a custom WB set for my lightbox and those lamps, the yellowness issue is pretty much solved. But hot could be an issue, the thin tissue paper sides on my ghetto lightbox have uh, smoked.
I got a pair of
these, the telescoping stand is very handy. Thought I'd throw in my experiences
Tantawi
May 3 2008, 22:09
I had the same issue, Pandya, but solved it by using my Sunpak 383 external flash bounced off the ceiling as the light source, and it works pretty well!

If its for filtering the light source, although it doesn't give the same effect you can experiment with baking/grease proof paper.
Tissue paper works well too, and its very cheap stuff. I got 8 A2 sheets for £1 from a stationers.
Mr Spoon
May 11 2008, 12:45
Does anyone have a comparison with greaseproof paper and cloth?
I have started mine, although I have a brown box, so have painted it. Was looking at attaching baking paper, but I do have an old sheet I can cut up.
