I filmed using a Sony HVR-ZE1, on HDV, and have slightly editted.
Now I am trying to output in both HD (slightly uprezzed i know) and SD formats, so i can compare them.

As I am trying to emulate television I have gone for MPEG2 format, as many of the tv stations in the UK broadcast in this, in both analogue and digital.
I am using the Adobe Media Encoder to acheive this.

Having output the files as HD:

1920x1080
PAL
25FPS
Upper First
Widescreen (1.0)
VBR, 2 pass - Min = 12mbps
Target = 18mbps
Max = 25mbps

And basically the same for SD:

720x576
PAL
25FPS
Upper First
Widescreen (1.422)
VBR, 2 pass - Min = 12mbps
Target = 18mbps
Max = 25mbps

I now find that all SD files are EXACTLY same size as the HD...
That surely can't be right?! I know the bitrates are the same and all, but you'd expect SOME difference...

I am trying to make a comparison, and so would it be unfair to show them like this? Is there a better way?

Basically working with HDV is a b***h.

I suggest you try using another exporting program, like Sorenson. But even that has it's downfalls. You could recapture the footage, using the timecodes, but that's just a lot of extra time.

I'll have a look at my settings for exporting when I get home.

I captured via Matrox RT.X2 from a Sony HVR-M15E.
The capture settings were 1440x1080, so i know i am uprezzing.

I need the file to be uncompressed, and so cannot use the sorenson codec.
Unless you mean a sorenson program, that i've not heard of.

I can't not use what I am using, which is premiere, as it has my edit laid out in it.

There's no time for recapping the footage, and as I said there's nothing really wrong with the way I have done it.

Any more suggestons please?

well I'm pretty sure that Adobe Media Encoder has some presets for mpeg2 encoding, so can you not just play with the settings, and then before encoding check that it is an SD resolution, there are 2 tabs if I can remember correctly, one for the original composition and then one showing the final outcome.

Yeah, your right. I did that to get where I am now.
I selected the setting for 1080i HDV, and changed the variable data rates (raised them to get a better quality video in HD). For the SD, I just lowered the resolution of the output file to 720x576 and changed the pixel aspect to 1.422.

I had assumed this would make some difference to the video's file, as its not as if you are constricting it to a constant bitrate, or just enlarging the video without increasing the pixel count...

?

I suppose if i think about it, by having the same defined bitrate the files of two videos rendered might be the same size. Logically speaking.
But on the other hand simple maths would indicate that more pixels per second would mean more file size...
