Really Really Bad.. I'm thinking of getting one next week!
does anyone else have one?... do you use it in the lounge room to browse sites or to chat to friends while listening to music?.. Can this take over browsing and Chatting on a real computer?
uh no. really its just a kinda cool toy. you get bored with it after a while.
for chat, i generally use AirAim or AimAir whatever its called. Typing is kinda a pain. It looks nice buts its just not a practical as youd want it to be.
What about safari.. How many tabs can you open with safari till it starts to lag?

I thought about getting one for a while, but I decided against it. My main uses for it would be the web browser, mail, and the iPod functionality (music and video)...
Then I realized: I don't get wi-fi connection anywhere outside of my house, where I already have a Macbook that I can take anywhere in the house to surf the net and chat (chat on msn, something that's not as simple to do on a Touch).
Music? iTunes on the laptop, or streaming it through to the Xbox 360 and my stereo.
Video? Same as music.
So outside of my house I would use it as an iPod... Kind of defeats the purpose of spending so much on it... So I decided against it.

Well I guess you can browse porn on it, so thats a plus!
Local McDonald's and shopping centers are starting to have WIFI everywhere now!
I have one and I absolutely love it; I haven't gotten to use it much yet though as I've been preocupied with a tramendous amount of other things. But the features are great; You Tube, Make Shift GPS, E-Mail, Weather, Web Surfing, Music Collection, Stock Market Status, Web Clipings, it's all wonderful. As for the Wifi deal, a lot of businesses and cities are adopting it to make it more comon place; hell even planes are starting to intigrate them. I use the wifi features at my house, my mom's house, my dad's house, the airport, McDonalds, and anywhere that has broadband internet that I take my "AirPort Express". But even without Wifi I enjoy being able to watch my preloaded videos and listen to my preloaded music collection. This Device Is Truely Increadible and I would recomend it to anyone (actually I already have recomended it to my friends). The Coolness factor is great! It's really awsome when resturants have wifi access to be able to surf while you wait for your meal or wait for the tab. Bars would be another great place if wifi is available. But as I mentioned you can bring your Wifi with you and connect it to any exsisting broadband with the "Apple AirPort Express", great stuff.

For the McDonald's don't you have to buy something from them first to get access?
Besides, another reason why I decided against it is because I can live without having the internet everywhere I go now, so I'm sure that I can spare myself the cost and just live without the Internet between my house and my office for a little while longer.
Maybe they'll release a higher capacity Touch some time later this year for the same price as the higher model now. Then I might consider it more. I have 14GB of music... That leaves almost nothing for any videos I may want to add.

I've used mine heaps lately. Sitting downstairs on the couch, if I wanna Google something, I can just whip out the ol' iPod and search it up. No more waiting 2 mins for my PC to boot and all that. It's great too, with movies on it. Makes road trips much more fun. I heartily recommend them =)
I use the web browser a LOT. Also, I can go on MSN, check Gmail, everything on it. It has weather and all that. It's really handy.
About the Safari Tabs thing, with the new patch I've experienced increased crashes and every now and then I get a lag spike. Once I had my iPod frozen up for 5 minute before crashing to desktop. I never had any issues on the 1.1.2 firmware.
Anything else at all you need to know, I'll help =)
Cheers!!!
OK is the Keyboard easy to get used to?
does the iPod pick up wireless devices and then notify you?
when your ipod froze do you remember how many tabs where open?
Do you use Apollo IM or mobileChat for instant messages?
Does the ipod have a built in speaker so you can watch movies/ listen to music without headphones?

Firstly, yeah, I'm pretty used to the keyboard by now. I very very rarely make mistakes on it. The only minor gripe I have is the auto-correction sometimes gets me. I spelled a word wrong once, and it added it to the auto-correction list, and after that when I spelled it correctly it corrected it to be wrong, if you get what I mean.
Secondly, whenever you open the wireless tab it shows you the networks around you. It won't tell you unless you have the wireless tab open. The wireless network I use, will always be connected whenever I unlock my iPod. It won't ask you to enter a password each time, or anything. It'll be just connected 24/7, which is pretty handy.
I must've had about 2-3 tabs open when it froze. I never have more than that. It's done it a couple times while I was using Maps/Mail/Weather apps. Maybe it's just my iPod, and it doesn't happen often enough to do something about it really.
I use the Meebo site for my IM. It works fairly well. I don't use Apollo or mobileChat.
Lastly, no, the iPod speaker only plays alarms/interface clicks/etc. It's a very basic speaker.
If there's anything else at all you want to know, I'm more than happy to help

The Keyboard seems a bit combersome; but no more than say a cell phone.
The iPod does detect wireless connections and was even able to bypass my MacFilter somehow on my local Wifi Network.
I haven't tested the tab usage in Safari much other than two tabs and I haven't incountered the freeze yet; you'll have to rely on Sin1st3r's coments on this.
I haven't used any IM client yet so I can't coment on this.
The iPod doesn't have any built in speakers as far as I can tell to listen to movies or music without earbuds, earphones or headphones.

Yes it uses Google Maps for the makeshift GPS using triangilation through wifi connections.
I imagine it would work in Canada as long as it can hop wifi and internet connections.
I absolutely love my iPod Touch, best impulse buy I've ever made. No regrets, best iPod i've ever used, best mobile browser I've ever used.
I use it at school when I dont want to wait for my laptop to boot and I can get tons of stuff done faster than any computer.
i completely recommend getting one to anyone with only the slightest inclination of interest.

www.meebo.com is great for aim, it had a built in speaker but it won't play music only click noises and whatnot. It's a really great product, i get a lot of "omg thats so cool!" ect just useing it around, and if you have an ipod adapter for your car (either fm tuner or a aftermarket headunit that you can plug it into) it makes it that much better. I'm impressed with mine, when my computer died last week i used safari a lot just to keep in touch with people.
EDIT: Google maps is amazing as well if you don't have a gps, just get directions in a wifi area then when you exit the wifi area if you've already loaded the directions it will keep them on there you just need to hit the arrow manually.

Actually something on the typing front, once you get used to it, and trust the correction system it works pretty fast. I was able to take notes in a lecture, and the prof talks damn fast. You just have to believe in the system that it will correct you along the way without you having to correct yourself even if you see mistakes.

Something that I don't think people really realize or think of is you can use the YouTube App to Stream Music Vids of virtually any song and thus increasing your music abilities on the iPod Touch. You can get fresh content via YouTube so while you may be limited in capacity you aren't in ability via the YouTube app. Now if they would just get flash to work right to play www.pandora.com on the go.

You're kinda missing the point. No one wants to spend time turning on Wi-Fi, search for the song & wait for it to load to listen to one track. Takes too long & not very practical.
I too love mine but also waiting for a 32/64 gig model.

1st, I wouldn't say "No one"; because I do. 2nd, Wi-Fi is always on once you set it up. 3rd, you don't wait for the entire song to download to start listening to it, it loads as you stream. 4th, It seems more practicle to me than to load only a limited select amount of songs on a tiny capacity drive that is shared with other information and data than not have any alternative. It's also more practical in the sense you aren't limited to exsisting content you have, your open to a wider range of content that doesn't consume precious disk capacity (or at least not in the significance of comparison).

I'll give you all of that but having Wi-Fi on will drain your battery within an hour of music listening. Plus, if you're an audiophile, YouTube sound quality isn't the best if you have hi-end earphones.
I told my friends about the iPod Touch and now we are all getting one!!
Just wondering.. if we have 3 iPods and want to share things with each other.. is that possible? - Without wires.
Also We are thinking of only getting the 3gb model, is there any difference or slowdowns between the 8 GB and the 16 GB? - Remember if you have a full Hard drive on your computer you will experience UI slowdowns.. Is that similar with the ipods?

Wi-Fi is already always on, it's only used when nessisary; Apple stats show that the iPod Touch gets over 18 hours playback time on music; there's no way wifi can reduce this down to 1 hour, even 1/2 of that is still 9 hours. Do some research and read about Apple's earbuds and how they were developed and what materials were used, you'll be surprised to find they had audiophiles in mind. And YouTube sound fluxs, it depends on the stream and the encoded bit rate wich is somtimes higher than 128kbps (what itunes store songs are released at) Sound Quality can be great, it's dependant on factors such as encoded bit rate and streaming rate and distortions in power flux and Radio Interferance and Electro Magnetic Interferance, too many impurities to mention to distort ANY audio source.

Full Hard Drives usually constitute slowdowns due to fragmentation. I have and only experienced the 16 GB version so I can't coment on the comparisons. As for wireless transfers I can't really think of a way off the top of my head, aside from e-mailing each other content via the built in e-mail feature. I haven't done a lot of exploring to know if you can share libraries in the Music feature like you can in iTunes (but even that your restrained to look and listen but not copy.) I imagine Apple would like to bleed every last red cent they can get out of you and thus don't allow or have anything available to share content wirelessesly (to each man, his own purchase of whatever content).

I believe my friends was "jailbroken"

He was able to install custom apps on it and I was VERY impressed by what he had installed and done.
Just a few questions if you don't mind...
1) If i do "jailbreak" it is there any risk of bricking it how big is that chance and will I lose the warranty or what not?
2) Is there a website where I can find any community created apps like my friend had something along the lines of "iPhysics" and Chess..
3) Will doing any of the above disable any features?
4) Is it possible to direct me to somewhere where I may learn how to do this or get the software necessary?
Thanks in advance

1. cant "brick" it that im aware of, if somethign goes wrong just power off/on while holding the home button and it will reset it.
RESEARCH FIRSTyes you will "Temporarily" loose the warrenty, before sending it back/support. reset it by holding down the home button ( youll have to rejailbreak though)
2. alot of the apps are intalled through Installer.app using sources ( think Linux ), or Remoting into the Touch itself ( using SSH capable FTP client, i use CyberDuck on my Mac and CuteFTP on my windows machine)
3. no it will not disable any features, unless you install services.app then you can disable what you want
4. what is required to jailbreak depends on what firmware you have, but a generic google search for - touch jailbreak - will point you to various places. there is also a dedicated section for Jailbreaking on the iLounge.com Forums
