The body of a man believed to be dead for more than five years has been found in a Bristol flat where a council tenant continued to live.

The corpse was discovered by council workers on a sofa in the lounge after neighbours reported a foul smell.

The deceased man, believed to be in his 70s, was the tenant's former lodger at the flat in Bedminster.

I'm surprised it took people 5 years to smell it.

That is just crazy to think he's been there for 5 years.

Just think, the last 5 new years celebrations (or booze ups) i've been at, this guys been sitting on his couch dead hmm.gif

What the hell? Was the place so messed up inside that they didn't notice a corpse rotting on the couch for five years?

Then again it IS possible, if the room wasn't used that often.

If you read the linked article on the BBC News site, it explains that the tenant suffers from mental health issues. Poor guy.

He was probably a pile of mush by then.

sounds like my ex-wife.
She was always lying in bed every time I came home
and never left it. She didn't speak to me for the last year.
I thought she was suffering from terminal PMS headaches.
If it weren't for the occasional dish in the sink I could
believe she never left the bed at all.

Maybe she was dead all that time and I was mistaken
about the dishes. I thought the smell was bad but
I was trying not to be insensitive to her feminine problems. sick.gif

Come to think of it, she didn't show up for the divorce proceedings. no.gif
She might still be lying there. w00t.gif

No one noticed his bills weren't paid (utilities/rent)? I'd think the smell would be gone after 5-years.

His state pension would be continued to be added to his bank account, and if the bills where all paid by direct debit he would always have had enough funds in his account to cover the bills; and therefore no red flag would be thrown up.

If you read the article he wasn't the bill payer he was only the lodger.

Mr Pring, who would have been 73, was a lodger at the flat in Bedminster.

It is thought the flat's tenant failed to report the death because he suffers from mental health problems.

The sad thing is the man's family never even noticed he didn't contact them (if he had family).

Yeah, I'd have expected a smell within weeks/months, and just bones by then. Maybe they reported it five years ago and it took this long for someone to go and investigate?

If the tenant had mental health problems, I'd like to know why he wasn't receiving proper support from local facilities. I guess his lodger could have been a carer or the illness only developed when he was older, but even so, it just shows how mentally ill and/or old people are neglected in this country. It's pretty disgusting.
