Firefighters have been battling a massive blaze at one of London's most popular tourist attractions.

Flames were seen shooting 30 feet above Camden Market in the north of the capital after what the authorities described as a "major fire" broke out.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said 20 fire engines were sent to the market following a 999 call.

More than 60 firefighters were said to be trying to bring the blaze under control.

Eyewitnesses reported a strong smell of gas at the location and hearing explosions as the fire took hold.

Fire fighters struggled to evacuate the area around the market, which is packed with bars and restaurants, on a busy Saturday night.
