hey, ok, i think i found a bug in IE (all versions, even vista) with displaying (and caching!) lots of animated gifs... first i found it when i was creating a DOM application, that dynamically browsing, adding and removing smilies on an HTML web page, and i though it was a DOM bug... i changed something and the bug disappeared... but then recently people began to report about their IE hangs and all, so i re-checked it and found that something crashes in IE when it displays OR has a lot of animated gifs in cache...

this is how the bug looks like:

and the proof of concept page is here: http://www.psycho.io/crash2.html

...so, i would appreciate if someone is willing to test it and post the results... if it will crash or not... just make sure to wait when all smilies will load (could be slow, because the server is in Russia) and then wait about 30 seconds with that page open... and yea, make sure you open it with IE, and won't have any other important windows open with that browser... some of my friends said they couldn't close IE without a task manager...

the bug also may be in Opera, but without a weired behavior, just the blinking images (ha, makes me think that opera has some IE code in it w00t.gif )

Everything works fine here - IE7 on XP SP2 with all the latest updates.

I tried IE7 xp sp2. It started freaking out. Scrollbar was blinking black and white. Title bar for the IE window disappeared for a bit, but now it seems to be working fine.

EDIT: after clearing cache. I got it freaking out again, but I couldn't take a screen shot because it said there wasn't enough memory.

IE7 under windows vista gives me a plain white page after 30 seconds rofl.gif

Locked up IE and managed to mess with my taskbar, nice discovery thumbs_up.gif

FWIW,
No problems using brand new Seamonkey 1.1.18 on XP Pro.

Yep,
All freaked out in IE6 on XP Pro. Page went totally black for a second, then split in half, with nothing there. Why does the url show up in some foreign language while the page is blinking though? Where you trying to re-direct people to?
Colin-uk
The smilies loaded, the page flickered a few times, but otherwise worked fine, using IE6 XP SP2.

lol.

IE6, XP (Most updates, not all) - Opened the page, loaded all the smilies and left it there for 5+ mins, didn't crash/hang... and this is on a pretty old pc.

I tried it in IE 3 and IE 4 just for the hell of it. IE 3 just plain crashed, while IE4 also freaked out.

IE 7 on XP SP2 and Vista Business....all hunky dory. No problems at all.

God... slow server FTL.

Loaded on both IE7 and Fx2 and 3. XP SP2.

Nothing happened except a heap of bloody smilies

An error prompt saying "not enough memory" and then IE7 messes up itself.
Strange. When I opened windows task manager and trying to terminate IE7, I found out there was still much enough memory to serve other processes (including IE7).

yea, really weird... so many different results from different people...

i wonder if it has something to do with hardware...

LOL Cool.

Opera loaded fine, IE6 SP2 was loading fine, let it load in background and clicked back on it and EVERYTHING started flashing on the screen.

ie 6, worked fine, and firefox (latest) worked fine.
Xp Pro SP 2
weird?
sisiphus
IE7 on Vista loaded ok...no probs
whitekolovrat
oh, iam sure it will be in all upcoming IE versions, unless they'll fix it =) or maybe its not browser's, but a component's issue... like this new ICQ6 bug %020000000s or something

wasn't there some web page that caused a bsod for certain video cards (+drivers?)?

XP Pro SP2. Worked fine in IE6&7 and firefox2. It does make all the three browsers use a lot of resources.
gdodson
Worked fine in IE8 and FF 2.0.0.12 on Vista. IE was amazingly fast compared to FF.
pikablu0530
ok no problems using IE8 in "IE8 Standards mode".

However, in IE8 using "IE7 compatibility mode", the browser freaks out and blinks and goes white (until I had to close the tab by guessing where the tab close button is).
xiphi
No problems here with IE8 or FF3.
kyosuken
no problem IE6 (need to keep 2 boxes as i can't use IE6 + IE7 at the same time sad.gif ) under XP SP2, though i am using a dual core and one of the core is used 100% when the page is loaded, but no flickering, no weird display...

It worked for me, no errors except for a few unrendered pictures at the bottom:

Bumping?

Thread "bumping" means reviving a thread that has been dormant for a certain period of time (for instance, 2 months).

As far as the original thread is concerned, this would appear to be an issue with Windows object allocation (also known as a "GDI" limit) which imposes a limit on how many objects can be created at any given time per process, the value was increased in Windows Vista SP1 however it is still possible to exceed this limit when using a (ridiculous) amount of objects. You will get the same effect by opening 40 Internet Explorer windows with 50 tabs each displaying various websites while having other applications open such as Microsoft Excel, Paint, Adobe Photoshop, etc.
shift.
To post in a thread that was last replied to in March (four months ago) is called "bumping a dead thread" tongue.gif
