Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a high end point and shoot and I've narrowed it down to the Sony H9 or the Canon G9. I'm going to Europe in august and i want to take a decent camera with me. I have been playing around with the Sony for a while now at work (Best Buy) Demoing Macro to customers and such, and the camera is awesome. I have not found a flaw yet, but the reviews on line are very mixed.
Now with the Canon, I've been wanting to try it out, but at my Best buy, and the other Best buys around, the display wont work because they cant get power to the thing. So what do you guys think? I was always under the impression that Canon was the best of the best, but the Sony is looking solid.
What do you guys think?

G9

At that price, you can get a dslr. Is that out of the question? I don't think portability is what you're looking for if you're considering the H9.

While I am all for dSLRs etc. I'd say a prosumer superzoom is better for most people looking for a camera imho

Yeah, i am not looking for a DSLR, just because i am just getting in to photography, and i dont want to worry about different lenses. The G9, and the H9, are both very good all around and they are both pretty light.

If you're getting into photography, then in the long run you'll appreciate the slr. At first, you can start out on auto mode and just use the kit lens all you want. I can guarantee you that you will still get better pictures out of it than a comparable P&S. Especially at a price point of $500--there's no reason to buy a P&S at that price when you can get something so much more for it.

I wholeheartedly recommend the D40 kit. It includes a fine general purpose lens so you won't have to worry about needing this or that. The interface and controls are pretty straightforward and simple read through the manual should be enough. Again, start out on the Auto mode and it will make the decisions for you until you reach that point where you want to experiment or go more in depth. Until then, just enjoy it. It's not the most advanced or technical SLR, but it's the most user friendly.

Here's a beginners review of it: http://www.photoshoplab.com/nikon-d40-a-be...ers-camera.html

Now if you still don't want to listen to me. laugh.gif Pass on the H9--reviews of it seem pretty wretched. Look at the SD870 IS, LX2, A720 IS.

Thanks a lot giga, im going to look into the D40, do you think that the kit lens will be good enough for macro? huh.gif
giga
Here's the lens it comes with: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-55-ii.htm

Scroll down to macro and it'll show you some of the shots. It can focus pretty close so it shouldn't be problem.

Hey, thanks a lot man, im going to go to work and price it out with my employee discount and check it out, but as far as the G9, do you think it is a bad camera, or do you just think that im getting more for my money with a dslr?
giga
G9 is probably one of the most advanced compact point and shoot that you can get. But yes, you get far more bang for the buck with a dslr at that price point.

I took a lot of pictures with my compact P & S before I got a D70 when they first came out. You can take a look at my Gallery to see what kind of shots you can pull off with P & S. I had a Canon Elph S110 (North America). I had that for years before DSLR came out. Oddly recently I just bought a new Canon SD850 to replace the old P & S.

I still love my DLSR though for when you want really quality pictures but when you're just out at a party or dinner, P & S is useful. It greatly depends on what you want to do with it. If you're interested in photography, get DLSR. If you want pictures when you got out etc., get a P & S. I don't know anything about Sony, but I do like Canon.
