Full Version: IE7: How to control which apps launch which links?

Hi all,

In IE7, how do I control the behavior of links to various filetypes? For instance:
  • I want links to PDF files to launch the Open/Save dialog instead of auto-launching Acrobat. Currently, even when I disable this option in Acrobat itself, links to PDFs still launch it.
  • I need the opposite for RM files: currently the Open/Save dialog opens, but I want jetAudio to launch. There doesn't seem to be a correlation to file associations, because jetAudio is currently the default app for RM files and works normally when I open a RM file on my hard drive.

    Any help would be MUCH appreciated for this annoying issue.

    Thanks! smile.gif

Just so you don't feel neglected - I know of no way to edit IE7s default file actions separately from those for MIME settings applicable to the whole system.

Evidently MS doesn't feel users should be tinkering with them. I'd look for a third party app or try one of the IE clones, FF, or Opera.

You could disable the adobe pdf addon and that would force it to open save-as I think [not sure though give it a try]

@Salgoth: Well, that figures. :-/
@Razorfold: I'll give that a try, thanks.

I've turned them off before... you need to do some tweeking in the registry here... HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type
