but it still says "No root file system" when I press "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk"

I am using a x64-bit version, but I have a AM2 x2 3800 in there, so it should be fine.

Full system specs:

AM2 x2 3800 (x64)
ASUS M2N-VM DVI
1gb (2 x 512mb) OCZ platinum
2 x WD AAKS 320GB HDDS
LITE-ON DVD BURNER

(using Ubuntu Server 7.10)

I have to go somewhere for the next two days, so I'll read up on this later.

I really have no experience with RAID, other than testing it once on an extra set of drives (I booted off of a standard partition).

Did you make sure that you followed the step where it saysbecause it sounds like the error is saying you don't have anything set to be the root partition.

I'm not sure, exactly. I'll try it again tomorrow. I have to leave for work in a few minutes. that might be it, who knows?
