Full Version: Phase Change Under The Knife!

Well guys, I am having my single stage phase unit, originally built by gomeler over @ xs, retuned by another member; teyber. The unit was originally tuned for a 275w heatload. That didn't work out well for to long, unit has massive floodback (popcorn sounds) on my Q6600 G0 even at 4.4ghz and 1.65vcore it had severe floodback. Dropped the unit off at his house and hes taking pictures as he goes, i thought id show you and after show my benches once i get it back as well. Enjoy. The first one is her under the knife, last 3 are when it was being built originally and finished.

looks interesting.

ive often wondered how loud/quiet phase change really is.
Berserk87
id like to know how loud it is as well. noexpression.gif

my guess is LOUD, like a mini fridge....which is basically is.
Circaflex
Its actually not that loud, i was expecting a lot worse. Honestly the floodback was louder than the system.

I heard OCZ was coming out with a turnkey phase change setup - was this idea canned ?

What is a "Zippy" PSU ? Is that a name brand ?

Circaflex
OCZ is bringing a select amount to retail, it turned out to be too much of a hassle i believe, its a decent dual core phase unit, but nothing for a quad.

Zippy is the brand.

What exactly is floodback? I've googled a little and I can't seem to find a straight answer. The hits I've gotten were from people who knew what it was =X

Just to add, Zippy makes most of their money in the server PSU business and they make *very* good power supplies.
Circaflex
In simple terms floodback is when the unit is too powerful and the temps are too low, not enough heat is being produced by the processor causing liquid to flood backwards in the unit. Floodback sounds like popcorn going off inside of the unit.
gwai lo
Ohhhh, I get I get it. Thanks.

haha wow, more powerful than what you're trying to run..nice stuff.
Circaflex
Yea, it was tuned to handle 275w head load constantly, even with my quad at 4.4ghz and 1.65 vcore it still was flooding back haha

I was just about to ask the same thing after reading through this topic. tongue.gif

I can't wait to hear more results after more testing. Those benchmarks must be insane!
Berserk87
4.4Ghz Quad oO what are you temps????

i have the same setup as you, but with a AC 7 Pro cooler, and some cheapo OCZ, which from the looks of it, is what is/was holding me back from OC'ing more.

Circaflex
my temps loaded were ~ -31 on the controller (evap temp) and around -17 or so within windows for the actual cpu temp.

hit a snag in the road, having someone else look at it. In the meantime ive picked up some ddr3 and a new board along with a core 2 Extreme QX6850. The phase unit should be done ~ 2 weeks or so
Circaflex
taking the unit to a very experienced builder tomorrow (he does cascade cooling for a living) he thinks hell have it done either this weekend or during the week smile.gif pics and benches soon!
gwai lo
Hopefully all goes well this time, let's see some 500 FSB with your quad. tongue.gif

sounds like floodback is a made up word ^_^

Im thinking this time around it will go better, this new guy is cheaper and has built some amazing cascades over @ XSForums. 500fsb would be sweet with a quad heres to high hopes w00t.gif

Refrigerant floodback occurs when refrigerant returns to the compressor before it has completely changed from liquid to gas. Refrigerant floodback is acceptable in certain heat pump designs where the amount of liquid returned to the compressor is carefully controlled with an accumulator.
