One of Apple's greatest strengths has always been the clean design and memorable branding of its products. Which makes this logo for its new MobileMe internet service all the more surprising. Why? Because it looks like a Windows knockoff, and it sucks, frankly. Rod Townsend, who wonders if this is "the worst logo in the history of Mac," has a few thoughts: It "Looks like a poor cousin of the Intel logo." It "Needs to cut down on the carbs." It "Looks like something Cindy McCain would hang in a child's nursery." Hey, we can play too! Apple's new MobileMe logo:

* Is being chased by Bubble Boy

* Should be on a package of Japanese soap. Cheap Japanese soap.

* Looks like the nameplate on a friendly child robot.

* Would make a poor tattoo.

* Would be removed, if it was in sticker form.

* Would work better on a line of female-targeted snowblowers.

* Secretly sniffs glue.

We really expect more from your genius branding people, Steve Jobs.

(You all can play, too!)

The MobileMe logo:
- Looks like a poor cousin of the Intel logo.
- Looks like it should have special pricing for a Wal-Mart "Rainy Day Sale".
- Makes me think of tampons maxi-pads.
- Could be a Shmoo, about to hug you but unable, as it has been blinded.
- Uses bi-tonal blues that look nonrelative to me.
- Looks like something Cindy McCain would hang in a child's nursery.
- Is a cloud, which is more toilet paper-y than computer-y.
- Is a cloud, which brings rain and lightning and which obscures the sun.
- Is probably something White People will like.
- Is androgynous.
- Needs to cut down on the carbs.
- Uses a script "me" in a flirty kind of way, like how Cosmo claims to be flirty, but is actually whore-y.
- Looks like it probably has a theme song by The Postal Service.

Also it was pointed out that it looks similar to another logo... whistle.gif

So, thoughts? How do you all like this new logo... does it scream "Mac" to you?
magik
I agree. It really seems out of place with the other high quality Mac/Apple logo designs.
digitalsoft
lmao, bad times!
DirtyLarry
Wow. That is a really, really poor logo. Wow.
Couch Potato
I have to agree, the logo is not as good as we're used to from Applel. They are teasing us, a new one is coming. ohmy.gif
cpu killer
I personally see nothing wrong with it, looks fine to me. I don't know why everyone would get so worked up over .. a logo?
Pajter
I think it's a bad logo too.
StevoJD
It looks perfectly fine to me?... The cloud doesn't really fit in though.
CoolerUK
Who cares hmm.gif its a logo for a product from apple, will it be representative of the product....no....so who cares smile.gif lol
russellc
I thought "what the ****" when they presented the logo.
what
If the globe wasn't in the background I wouldn't mind it... although it would look strange sitting in the middle of my Applications stack.
Brad.

I have to agree.

Nothing really works for me tongue.gif
REM2000
didn't really mind the logo, and as someone else has pointed out, mobile me is exchange for everyone type product so it does convey an ease of use product.
Mouldy Punk
Maybe they're expecting it to do as well as Windows ME tongue.gif

Because a logo represent the branding of a product?
.KICK
Really not feeling that logo much, what were they thinking, I wonder if they will change it confused.gif
giga
I could care less. It's certainly not their best but it's far from "horrible"--it's easy and seems "fun". The actual product itself though looks fantastic.
sundayx
Wahey! Whatever, I love it. (Maybe not the cloud stuff)
Cadium
I don't mind it, the logo seems to reflect the way that you can personalize the service and how it keeps you in touch with all of your information (push email, contacts, etc.)

We're not discussing the service, which is great by the way. wub.gif

I noticed that it did look out of place, but at least it's better than this.

Exactly...I dont understand why everyone says its a bad logo. Do one better!
PsykX
I never liked the .Mac logo. And I don't care about this one ^_^

Edit : I have to admit though that for a Mac owner who says MS always copies Apple, just because the "me" looks way to much like the Windows me logo, they badly need to change it before July 11th.
Cara
The discussion regarding this logo has extended far beyond the public sector. wink.gif

In my opinion, it is one of the poorest excuses for an Apple logo ever designed. There is already a campaign internally to design alternative icons to use once it releases. wink.gif

I'm with ya man, the new services look amazing, especially the web apps. As far as the logo itself I kind of like it, seems playful and fun like giga said. Plus I like the clouds and the color of blue. Btw anyone know what font that is? for "me" looks like Lucida Handwriting but not quite.
joyntkid
It kinda looks like an alt. logo someone made to go with some random pack, not something for a standard apple program icon.
Xero
^mobileme isnt a program, its a service.
raider360
Looks fine to me. noexpression.gif
Quillz
I see no issues with it.
LunarFalcon
I don't like it either, but I'm still a hater of the name, so that's 2 strikes! The service looks awesome though, even better than I expected.
mattrobs
It's meant to appeal to common computer user. The whole your data in the “cloud” metaphor.

It's good, but it's not good for an Apple logo. They could have done better.
duritz
of course mobileME is a monthly fee of 9.99 and up. why can't you just buy the service once? or have it free?
EDIT: 1 year is 9.99 so not bad at all. excuse my last statement!
Unto Darkness
The minute I saw the logo, I was like ohmy.gif ...

Seriously, Me? ME? Who in the right mind would try to make it resemble Windows Me?

Your first guess was closer. It's 99/year.

man i must need glasses. i can't believe it. that's just another $8 to add onto the iphone monthly charge. sheesh. good thing it isn't required.
The_Decryptor
I like it.

It's designed like an iPhone/iPod Touch button (i.e a square), the me is supposed to look like hand writing, and it's storing all the information "in the cloud".

It's actually a pretty good icon IMO.

When you put it that way, it sounds pretty nice tongue.gif

Personally, I don't judge things until I see them in use. Think of the translucent menu bar. Many people who liked it originally turned it off when they started using it, and vice versa. It might actually fit in where they use it.

The logo isn't Apple-like, but who cares. It accomplishes its job really well.

- It represents the metaphor of your Email, Contacts, Calendars and Photos being up in a "cloud".
- It looks a hell of a lot better compared to how .Mac showed all your data being on the internet.
- There is a direct connection between the logo and the Web Apps.
- They are able to use the logo to show the user how data moves between devices and MobileMe.
- The Me part of it is made a lot more obvious by a cursive/fun font. This is done to help point users to the right URL, me.com.
- Myriad Apple/Pro is not a "fun" font.
- The logo is fun as it is aimed at consumers.
- Windows ME stood for Windows Millennium Edition. Windows ME is irrelevant.

The MobileMe logo is a lot more clean, it's more obvious and users wont get it confused with the Network icon.

If anyone can come up with a logo that makes it obvious various kinds of data are in the "cloud", easily shows how data moves, is fun and doesn't get confused with the Network icon, I'd like to see it.

Seriously, Me? ME? Who in the right mind would try to make it resemble Windows Me?

I think most people who are literate enough to use computers who realize that Windows ME was an operating system and MobileME is a web-based service. Yes, they look similar, but it's really not something that most people would ever associate together.

Besides, ME had such a short lifespan that I doubt most people even remember it, anyway.
sundayx
Windows ME was probably the last thing on my mind when I saw mobileme anounced.
Matrix XII
I think most of us agree, that kind of work is not what we expect out of Apple.

The logo on the right is great, your photos, contacts, calenadar entries and e-mails are "floating" in the cloud.

It's some great symbolism.

The 'Signature' font is the largest thing I have an issue with... It looks like Windows ME and Vista had a kid and that is what came of it. tongue.gif

Actually--the "mobile" part is Myriad Pro. whistle.gif

I can understand the cloud in the logo. Cloud Computing etc..
But the 'me' part. Instant flash backs to Windows Me.
ispamforfood
That's a sad excuse for a logo alright.....

I like the one with the four icons in the cloud, but the one that looks like a button for the iPod Touch just feels like something's missing.

I know that. That's why I put that point after:

You@me.com.

With MobileMe Mail, you can create an email address that’s personal and easy to remember. Maybe it’s yourname@me.com or maybe it’s something clever. Whatever you think up, it will be your best email address yet.

What button is that though? All the MobileMe services are covered through Mail, Address Book, Calendar, and Safari.
