Just saw this in my Windows Live Messenger contacts window. The box beneath the display picture one. It’s the first time I’ve seen this, and I have no idea why. I couldn’t find anything on it on the official Windows Live Messenger
Blog and even
Liveside . Seems like it’s a placeholder for some image though it shows none. Anybody got any info on this?

Something else that's interesting too is this

Same here. I have it under the display pics of some contacts. I was chatting to a friend, and he said that
his friend also noticed it.

Strange.

Me & a friend of mine noticed about it the last night too.
As I can see in the link provided by
TakeNothingBack, some people is getting the Microsoft Office logo in the place we have the white box.
Some migration to Office Live Communications Server?

I have office 2007 installed too, but I'm not seeing the Office icon but the box in the first post in this thread. And I can't find any explanation for it.
I don't have it on my PC (maybe because im using a MP! Live Skin) but on my friends PC when I signed into my secondary account it was there
I was getting that as well... Then it disappeared and my friend got it.

Exactly the same here, not sure if it matters, but i've got both Office 2007 and WLM9 Beta, other than that, who knows?

i just did a windows update and it seemed to have removed the white box's on all my contacts online.. for the time being

Someone on Connect just said the white box is for WLM 8.5 downwards, while the office logo is WLM9.

Update: the white box has now eventually come back
Any info on why the white box is even there.. or even why the office logo is displayed?

I've got this issue in WLM 8.1 as well since this afternoon. I thought it was my WLM so I restarted it but it didn't help.

Same here, I'm on WLM 8.5 + a-patch. At first I thought there was something wrong with the patcher but that is not the case. The box doesn't appear on all contacts though. I'll decide if I want to get rid of it after we find out what it is lol

Apparently it's a server screwup. It's meant to denote people using Office Live.

Possibly be the new on line document collaboration . You know similar to Net Meeting White board. It is just a thought. Rumor only... but to think about having a friend/co worker edit a document with you at the same time on line.
