Hello!
So my D60 is treating me well, I am learning about the functions well, however there are some shots where I want the shot either out of focus, or it is of a plan wall (so nothing to focus on) or sometimes I know the shot is actually in focus but my camera thinks it isnt, or so it seems.
What I am really asking I guess, is is this a setting in the camera, or just the way SLRs work?
Thanks

If you take it out of automatic mode it'll take whatever you tell it to.

Set it to manual focus and enjoy

you will control the focus by the focus ring on the lens, so you can focus/not focus on anything and the camera will take the picture whenever you press the shutter button.

See this is where I post and realise the answer only hours after posting.
I remembered about it today, but then I guess it will start teaching me to always focus manually.
Your lens has a minimum focusing distance. MF helps, but be sure to take into account the MFD when shooting as well.
Thing is--why are you shooting a wall? lol.
I know on the Canon you can re-assign a button to be your focus, and your trigger button to do just that, trigger.
It allows you to focus with your thumb, and snap fast with your forefinger.
But doing so you can just snappy snap with or without your focus button pressed...

Ha ha, the wall had a nice colour so I thought I would take a stock shot of it

There should also be a button on the back that's like "AF-L" on it that you can press to lock in the focus for a picture, at least my D40 has something like that, don't have it with me to tell you exactly what it is but it should be right next to the viewfinder I would imagine.
