Full Version: Apes Deserve Human Rights, Spanish Leaders Say

Hum
Spanish apes are one step closer to receiving the same rights to life and freedom humans have.

The environmental committee of Spain's parliament approved resolutions that urge the European country to comply with the Great Apes Project — a plan developed by philosophers and scientists who say the animals deserve the same rights as their closest genetic relatives, the Reuters news agency reported.

"This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defense of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity," Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of the Great Apes Project, told Reuters. "We have no knowledge of great apes being used in experiments in Spain, but there is currently no law preventing that from happening."

The new measures are the latest in what appears to be Spain's move from a conservative state to liberal trailblazer.

Under the new rules, keeping apes for television commercials, filming or circuses would be illegal, Reuters reported.

Why do people think humans are somewhat more valuable than other lifeforms. This is surely a step in the right direction.
digitalsoft
aslong as england doesnt start accepting them as immigrants and lets them take our jobs its all good lol. How is keeping an ape in a Zoo fair then??

Am wondering that also. So they just are picking and choosing which animals get to have these rights? Why not all of them?

It's very odd.

I agree that animals should not be mistreated (except big ugly spiders), but think about the following: if all animals get the same rights as human beings, we will all have to become vegeterians... Yummie... veggie burgers... sad.gif

Kill an rat then go to jail ..
zeta_immersion
I agree with this but then Bush .. should he have the same rights as a monkey? ... NOT!!!! ...

on all seriousness ... all animals MUST be protected by law... just because homosapiens is such as ****ed up animal it does not have the right to take the life of another (even if it gets attacked). Ie. lion vs gazelle is fine -> food , humans vs cows -> food, but humans vs monkey -> Not cool ... also there is no reason in exterminatig certain animals just because we think they are not needed

The danger is that we don't know when to stop, and eventually anything and everything has rights. It's a slippery slope, so to speak.

There's nothing wrong with a healthy dose of self-interest. It's a self-protection mechanism of most, if not all living beings, and you would do well to keep it.

Donnie Darko, while totally missing the point of the book he was discussing says it better than I ever could. Merciless copy/paste of IMDB ftw.

[from the Extended and Deleted Scenes. The class is discussing Watership Down]
Karen Pommeroy: This could be the death of an entire way of life, the end of an era...
Donnie: Why should we care?
Karen Pommeroy: Because the rabbits are us, Donnie.
Donnie: Why should I mourn for a rabbit like he was human?
Karen Pommeroy: Are you saying that the death of one species is less tragic than another?
Donnie: Of course. The rabbit's not like us. It has no... keen look at something in the mirror, it has no history books, no photographs, no knowledge of sorrow or regret... I mean, I'm sorry, Miss Pommeroy, don't get me wrong; y'know, I like rabbits and all. They're cute and they're horny. And if you're cute and you're horny, then you're probably happy, in that you don't know who you are and why you're even alive. And you just wanna' have sex, as many times as possible, before you die... I mean, I just don't see the point in crying over a dead rabbit! Y'know, who... who never even feared death to begin with.

Because there is a vast majority of very vocal nitwits, especially amongst the scientific community who genuinely believe that apes are our "ancestors".

Until this madness/nonsense is exposed for what it is (could be a very long time given the maniacal, arrogant and often conceited nature of this majority group), I completely understand how this has happened, because if you believe in Darwinian principles and their modern offshoots, you will likely also find some sense in this.

A good example of sheer human guesswork gone mad and a good example (as if there arent enough already) of why our Creator left us with guidance instead of leaving us to work it all out for ourselves with dire consequences that doing so results in.

Have we then no sense?

Humans are apes, we belong to the same superfamily (Hominidae; commonly known as the "Great Apes") as orangutans, gorillas & chimpanzees. Chimps are our closest cousins, studies show that the difference in DNA is only 10 times that between two unrelated humans and less than 10 times the difference between rats and mice.

All Humans are Apes, but not all Apes are Human. That said, you are correct in that non-human apes shouldn't be given human rights.

You are right, I have always known about man. From the evidence, I believe his wisdom must walk hand and hand with his idiocy. His emotions must rule his brain. He must be a warlike creature who gives battle to everything around him, even himself.

With rights come responsibilities. If apes are going to get the same rights as humans, will the same be expected of them in other ways? Jail time for law breaking, send their children to school tongue.gif

I imagine that these new laws are not going to go *that far*, the media always likes to exaggerate.

I don't see why it's so awful to use animals in commercials if they are being looked after properly, better than using them to test out new drugs. I'd sooner see that banned, I hope it is in Spain after this all this.
skiiper
I dont see why the debate in this. Lets just make it simple:

Human rights are granted to every member of species Homo Sapien. Everything else has no human rights. End of discussion.

If every animal had human rights, we can all kiss burgers, steaks, wool clothes, chicken wings, bacon, seafood, leather seats, turkey dinners, leather wallets and purses, pets, petting zoos and beastiality good bye.

Humanity is Overrated..

Does anybody feel it's ironic that SPAIN is doing this? They slaughter bulls slowly in public and rip the heads off of chickens for fun.....
Rebdomine
The spanish leaders probably just meant their own people when they said apes.. same thing..

(Was that racism?)

Probably, but i would have found it funny no matter what country it was, so meh IMO tongue.gif

I also agree with teriba, its quite ridiculous that they do this for apes but think its ok to treat other animals like that.

I can see the court room after an ape commits a crime, like throwing crap at someone, and they try to question the defendent.

What a bunch of dingle berries. Go ahead a protect animals from the idiots that drag them behind cars, but fire crackers up their butts, etc. but to say animals deserve the same rights as humans is quite irrational.
