Okay, it's possible to do, but it takes a bit of technical prowess, not much, just a bit. Okay, here's what you do...
1. Locate msgina.dll in your Windows\System32 directory and copy it to another folder on your computer. Rename it msgina2.dll.
2. Download the free Resource Hacker from
http://delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zip, extract the files and run ResHack.exe
3. Click File>Open, navigate to the folder where you just copied msgina2.dll and open that file.
4. Click the + icon next to Bitmap, click the + icon next to 107, then highlight the entry 1033. In the right-hand pane you should see your standard XP Logon bitmap.
5. Save the bitmap to a file (Action>Save [Bitmap...]) and then open that file in your image editor, make your changes (or create a completely new image) and save.
6. Return to ResEdit, with 1033 still selected, click Action>Replace Bitmap. Locate the bitmap you just saved and load it in.
7. Click File>Save, exit ResEdit, and copy msgina2.dll into your System32 folder.
8. Go to Start>Run and type 'regedit' to launch the Windows registry editor.
9. Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ and then create the subkey Ginadll (this should be a String value).
10. Edit the Ginadll subkey so that it contains: msgina2.dll
11. Exit regedit and reboot. Your changes should take effect.
