Full Version: Why have a VGA port on an HDTV if it causes a hum bar?

I just got a Magnavox 32" 1080i,720p HDTV from SamsClub. It has a PC (VGA) port but when I hook up my pc it has a hum bar so what's the point of having a VGA port on the TV then?

I get the same thing via s-video. I was told HDMI to DVI fixes the hum bar issue but have yet to buy a cable. My idea was to hook PC to TV so I can watch DVD's until I can buy a Blu-ray player.

are you sure you are using the right refresh rate?

I'm not sure. I have a 1920x1200 monitor, and the picture quality is pretty close to perfect with the VGA cable, but under certain conditions (Certain static images) you can notice some artifacts.

Of course, I have a DVI out, so it's no big deal. I was just curious.

refresh rate is 60mhz and that is all I have so I can't change it same thing with s-video,

A visual artifact on the screen, typically a horizontal bar where the picture is distorted, which then rises to the top of the screen, and repeats.

I'm sure you've seen them on TVs.

I'm guessing its a scanline bar

i've seen something like it before (full image is drawn but a much brighter bar of light in a certain spot on the screen) usually when the screen is out of sync with the source (tuning megadrive/nes consoles to a tv and being a bit off tongue.gif)

i think your problem stems from the tv. i use my VGA port and it looks fine.
