Nano

Digg.com's Kevin Rose has posted on his blog and made a YouTube video with supposed inside info to apple's udpates in September.

- Revamp of entire iPod line which has been circulating for a while now.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the iPhone.
- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
- iTunes 8.0 to include new features.
- Blu-Ray support coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6

booboo
I read this a few days ago.

It's disgusting, if this is true I will be highly disappointed in apple because they are meant to have style, and this "redesign" is the exact opposite.
Ew.

I guess slim is back and chunky is out the door with the Nano.

lol
Lasker
they should include support for blu-ray in the upcoming 10.5.5, because there are already external blu-ray drivers that we can buy.
BilliShere
i actually think the new nano looks quite nice.

Kevin Rose is an idiot, he made predictions about how the 3g iphone would have a front facing camera, and that the iphone would be in CDMA as well as GSM and that it would have a slide out keyboard.

Id take anything he says with a grain of salt.
instant.human
he might not be an idiot but i wouldnt trust his predictions either, tbh.

would be nice though, i think the nano-picture is goodlooking. =)
Cormier6083
I wouldn't touch that thing with a 5,186 foot pole.

And I thought OS X already supported Blu-Ray?

It looks like outer packaging for what COULD be a new iPod Nano inside.

But it's just ugly.

Heres an idea for a new Nano: Don't change it. Just bring out more colours. Or maybe even some patterns. HP are doing it with their laptops - why can't Apple do it with iPods? tongue.gif

Well, they're are supposedly going to make "rainbow" colored iPods... don't ask why. biggrin.gif

Anyone wanna bet on how wrong he is? 50% inaccuracy is currently at 2-1.
Pink Floyd
with that nano design, that won't be a touch nano like we've seen in the past months in rumours websites.
PsykX
You can't have a nano like this, it's impossible.
Just look at the screen, its roundness follows the shape of the iPod. Have you recently seen a ROUND screen from Apple on a new product? From anybody else on a new product?

No.
MasterC
Knowing Kevin's track record with his previous rumors, I wouldn't trust this at all.
rajputwarrior
yeah kevin track record isn't great... we'll see what happens

He isn't too bad, he knew a bit about the iphone, and something is on the way it has been a year now.

I second that.
The Tjalian
I really don't like the way the actual plastic casing on the screen is raised from the screen itself (especially that much), this will lead to horrific glare issues (just check out the screen there, if it's that bad with fake light, imagine it in the sun). I hate to say it (as it'll probably rile up a few people round here), but it looks like a Zune clone with the iPod wheel slapped on.

Are there pretty obvious similarities or is it just me?

All in all though, I don't like the direction that nano is going. I'd much rather see a touch screen nano, similar to the iPod Touch, except smaller. They could redesign the interface fairly simply, too. Even web browsing would still be possible (I've been web browsing on phones since I got my Nokia 3510i, lol), although it'd probably more similar to current phone web browsing rather then PC-quality browsing.
Cormier6083
I think Kevin is just looking for attention, so he can add some more cool millions to his $60 million dollar wallet.
tsupersonic
Given KR's track record on Apple rumours, he might be right. I think the Nano lineup is going through way too many changes, not much differences from 1st to 2nd gen, but 3rd gen and 4th gen are completely different, I think they need to be consistent.
Zygar
I can see the iPod touch getting a cosmetic update to make it look more like the iPhone 3G, and possibly the inclusion of a white iPod touch.

Man, I'd totally buy a Touch Nano.. biggrin.gif

I doubt Apple will give up the chrome back. But who knows.

I get the feeling that at this point even Apple doesn't really know what to change anymore to really improve the product. Change for the sake of change. tongue.gif

I really like the MacBook Nano photoshops that are floating around, they're great looking but I'd imagine they wouldn't cost a penny less than the current MacBook Air notebooks.

My Mac days are over as soon as they started, my MacBook wouldn't wake up from sleep mode. Tried taking out the battery and everything and it was still dead. So I had no choice but to return it.

New iPod Nano Mock-up Takes the Sting Out of the New iPod Nano
1:50 PM on Wed Aug 27 2008 By Mark Wilson

I can't speak for everyone in the room, but I'm not all that excited about the possibility of the iPod nano returning to its long, skinny origins. Originally repulsed by the latest iteration of nano, the deformed, squat body won me over the first time I actually held it in my hand. And it instantly made the styling of its thin predecessor seem like a vanity device—a lipstick-like accessory, not something designed to easily play my music. Anyway, these concept mock-ups by flickr's Umpa reminded me that skinny is still pretty hot. Widen the screen a tad and I might be sold, again. Bonus shot:

Quote -
You see, putting Wall-E on the screen makes the concept oh so much more convincing. And adorable.

crazzy88ss
For some reason, I just highly doubt apple would make the nano look like that for way more reasons than I list to care.
booboo
DAMN nice concept though.
tsupersonic
Damn that looks sexy. I always wanted for Apple to make exactly something like that
bmaher
IMO, we have no chance of something like that, as it looks nicer than the touch, and it's hardly good business practice to have a cheaper product upstage a more expensive one.
Impact
I guess the new design isn't so bad, but I really like the design on the current gen.

I was wondering the same thing as well...
(and that change from Neowave to .Neo was easy to notice, but from .Neo to .Reo while changing your avatar and your sig... it took me a while tongue.gif)

And now, with all these mockups and covers, there's no more reason to call it a rumour.
I mean, who would lose its time to do a mod to an older iPod, then create covers, or to photoshop so many pictures?

I'm not saying all these informations are true, like that strange iPhone interface fitted in an iPod nano, but the physical design of the device has to be true.

Am I the only person who loves the nano 3G? I hated the long, skinny design. I just find the shorter, wider version to be much more comfortable, at least just for me.

Also, someone brought this up on MacRumors... Rarely, if ever, does Apple replace one gen with another one based on an old design. Yes, the materials change from time to time, but not usually the overall design. It seems like Apple clearly wants the nano to have an even larger screen than what it has now. Couldn't they accomplish this by simply making the screen larger on the current design, and either move the click wheel to the back (un-Apple like) or make it software based? (More like the touch.)

No, you're not alone tongue.gif although I admit that these mockups on the previous page look hot, even for a long and skinny iPod.

I know technology moves fast, but I hate it when Apple release their iPod lineup so fast. It's buggy as hell when first release. Takes a few months for updates to be release & maybe finally it's running good. Then boom! Another iPod. Same can be said about iPod accessories. You wait months later to get a great case or any accessory. Boom! Another iPod that will only work with whatever new is coming out later. And it won't work with the older iPods.

I give Jobs a lot of credit for being great at marketing. They get everyone so giddy up for that "day" that people will automatically jump on & buy whatever they release. Bugs or not. Cool or not. Keep this up, they can release new iPods every 6 months & make even more money.

I know I don't have to buy every new iPod & Apple is a business and all. But that's just greed. Get your act together Jobs.
PsykX
What was so fast?
It's been a year now, and I think they'll go for new iPods every year, starting... last year.

If they had to make a new iPod every 2 years, they wouldn't follow the market, thus they would be incompetitive.

By releasing ipods every year they can update the design, make the hard drive or whatever bigger, change the components to make it environment-friendly, change the firmware, and create a new marketing buzz on the release day and on the next few days.
The last point is a good reason to release it every 12 months for them IMO. The other points are good enough for us.

So you'd rather apple not be innovative and come up with great new ideas?

How about focus on fixing the bugs on the current line-ups rather than just pushing new models out the door just for sakes of upgrading.
PsykX
There are bugs on ipods? tongue.gif
No seriously, what have you encountered?
Also, when you encounter something, it is always better if you tell Apple, if it isn't fixed, it's probably because they missed it.

Owners of the iPhone & touch knows what I'm talking about. Ever since I've upgraded to 2.0, nothing but crashes. 2.0.2 is out & it's still the same.

That's a software issue which they are actively working on. iPhone OS 2.1 is coming out next month.
PsykX
Oh yeah, if you're talking about iTouch and iPhone, I've got one and I know what you mean. But they ARE working on a 2.1 firmware and you've got to admit that this firmware is actually a complete OS, thus it must be quite big, quite hard to develop, and contain a couple of hundred thousands of lines of code, if not millions.

As for the iPod nanos, iPod classics, and iPod shuffles, they're pretty much flawless according to me. Either people don't know how to use it, or they received a lemon, which they have to replace in store.
MulletRobZ
My old iPod Nano 2G only crashed on me once, which caused me to lose my music. Aside from that, it worked beautifully.

As for this upcoming one, I hope they do return to that long, skinny form factor, as the 3G version was just butt ugly! biggrin.gif
Alexandre.
And i just bought an iPod Nano too =( Apple come out too fast with their releases.

The black ipod nanos in the previous page are awsome. If apple decides to make something like that that would be the 1st thing I would buy.

man i always love these rumor-threats on neowin. seriously. =)

however, i never cared too much for the nano eversince i bought an ipod g5 to replace my 4gb ipod mini, which i loved (i had the rare gold one, it was rare in germany at least!) but always felt restricted because of the space...

i love how apple releases new ipods every year. i mean i bought mine in early... lets see... 2006 or 2005, i dont remember and i never felt the need to update. just buy one, sit back and watch technology evolve. and at the time you see the need for a replacement... go for it. and then again, sit down, relax and watch technology go its way. =)
Couch Potato
You can't believe anything ( completely ) until the product has been officially announced. At least, you can't in my opinion.
