I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to 4GB of RAM last night, and I'm wondering what I should do with the original RAM. I would like to sell it, but I have a question before I do. If my laptop were to have some problem and I took it into an Apple store for service, would they want the original RAM put back in to rule out hardware issues? Last time I was in there I overheard a Genius telling a customer that in order to get his laptop repaired, he would have to put his original hard drive back in. Any thoughts?

MasterC - Precisely what I am wondering myself. smile.gif

From day 1, I upgraded my 1gb ram to 4 on my iMac and have kept the Memory in my storage unit behind lock and key just in case. I figure, better safe than sorry. I have a 3 year apple care on it as well, so might end up "storing" it for a long time if anything should happen and Cara or someone else on here confirms that it might be needed in case of system repair.

Well I've had my MB repaired before and they didn't care for the after-market RAM and HDD I had installed.

upgrading the ram does not void warranty so they should still fix any problems, if a problem arises i'd send it in rather than taking it to the shop for repair.

Id say just keep the sticks though, I mean, their worth what? $20 if that. May as well keep it, surely it will come in handy or something...

i'll tell you my little story about keeping your RAM.

My imac came with 1GB of RAM and later on i upgraded to 4GB, works wonderful, But......

i was fooling around with installing and uninstalling software and then decided to reinstall Leopard, the installation would start but about 30% of progress an error message would pop up saying "could not validate the "Essentials package" or something like that, tried and retried around five times and nothing, upon some research online, it turns out it was the RAM, my Precious iMac is so spoiled that would not accept the OS without its Original RAM.

and where was my Original 1GB of RAM? oh yes i installed it in my Fiancee's laptop pinch.gif
So there i was, bringing back my girl's laptop to take it apart LOL and put the thing back on the iMac so i could reinstall Leopard.

and guess what? It Worked!

So this may or may not happen to you, but this is my story and how i learned that i should definitively keep the Original RAM close LOL

I have since reinstalled OS X and didn't have any issues. So it might have been the maker or quality. Hard to say. I know that I think I ended up using the same maker which was Crucial brand for mine. So, that may have played a role in it.

Like a previous poster suggested, I would keep the extra sticks for emergency purposes.

I upgraded my macbook also and I am keeping my old 2GB. They don't sell anyway. I mean, I've just bought kington 2x2GB for 35$ cad each! So 2x1GB worth nothing imo

Yeah I would definitely say keep the old sticks around for emergency purposes. Who knows, maybe your new RAM might go bad in a few months. There's no way of knowing when you'll need them until it happens.

Thanks for all the answers guys. Looks like I'll be keeping them after all. smile.gif

It's definitely a good idea to keep it. I bought 2x2GB DDR2 PC6400 RAM today and I kept my old 2x1GB DDR2 PC5400 RAM. I have it as "backup".

Hm, unlike everybody, I'd try to get rid of it. I hate to have a storage place where I put all my random stuff in it. And what are the chances that RAM goes bad in reality? I've heard of a FEW and I mean a FEW isolated cases about RAM going bad years ago, but not recently.
