hey guys... is there a way to remove the "Local Area Connection ... A network cable is unplugged" icon from the taskbar ? ... either thru a reg patch or some reshacking?...
i dont want to be informed of when my bro switches off his comp... so i dont need to have this icon...
pizza
go to network connections, right click that connection and choose disable...all set! smile.gif
kenshin
hehe i dont want to disable the device... just not have displayed...
btw... quick reply smile.gif
MrGreen
Check Virtual Plastic.
dougkinzinger
you can't...without an addin piece of software it seems
degofedal
Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click for properties on your connection -> Uncheck the 'Show icon in notification area when connected'

Hope it helps!
jzetterman
Simply go into Network Connections, right click on the Connection and click disable, it doesn't hurt anything unless you use it.
MrGreen
Can't you just choose not to show the network connection in the Properties menu?
Or just make the tray icon an Always Hide.
kenshin
The thing is it is used...
autohiding it works sometimes... but always returns after bro turns off his comp...

i want a perm solution that hides it no matter what...
connect or disconnected...
i dont wanna have to go into network connections and enable it everytime he wants to use the net etc...
anyway if there's a 3rd party software i'd like to know the name etc
thx guys

Go to the following

Start / Run > mmc

File / Add - Remove Snap-in

add the Group Policy Editor, and comfirm for local settings.

Next got to

User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Network / Network Connections, there change the setting for "Prohibit viewing status for an active connection."

Quote -
Determines whether users can view the status for an active connection.

Connection status is available from the connection status taskbar icon or from the Status dialog box. The Status dialog box displays information about the connection and its activity. It also provides buttons to disconnect and to configure the properties of the connection.

If you enable this setting, the connection status taskbar icon and Status dialog box are not available to users (including administrators). The Status option is disabled in the context menu for the connection and on the File menu in the Network Connections folder. Users cannot choose to show the connection icon in the taskbar from the Connection Properties dialog box.

Important: If the "Enable Network Connections settings for Administrators" is disabled or not configured, this setting will not apply to administrators on post-Windows 2000 computers.

If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the connection status taskbar icon and  Status dialog box are available to all users.

Try this;

How to Disable Media Sense for TCP/IP in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239924

You will still get the icon if the cable is removed - but this should prevent windows knowing if the line is active or not - and therefore not tell you that the other machine is no longer there.
krejziba
do what was above said..

Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click for properties on your connection -> Uncheck the 'Show icon in notification area when connected'

since you dont want it disabled, just want not to be able to see it!
BudMan
I guess people just do not understand the question/problem - He does not want to see when the other machine is disconnected. So I am guessing they are using a crossover cable - since if they were both connected to a hub/switch. This would not be an issue.

When his bro shuts down his machine. He sees the network not available icon in his systray (computer with red X). This is NOT the network available icon, which can be turned off by saying you do not want to see the icon when connected, etc..

The correct way to get what you want is to disable the media sense option - I gave link to Q article in previous post. This way your machine can not tell you the network is not available. And there it will not show you that network not available icon in your systray.
kenshin
i tried it budman...
didnt work... still shows up...
thats for trying thou...

Using Home or Professional?
dougkinzinger
man, you people don't get it....unfortunately, it can't be done! and, the 'uncheck display on taskbar' box only works when the connection has something plugged into it as stated before.... realmad.gif !!

reshack netshell.dll

looong time ago, i changed the icon of the "disabled network" to other icon, but the icon didnt appear at all. but when i went to control panel, network connection. then explorer just freezed up
Dominik
they dont get it because they dont read his problem carefully...
and for those who say "you can disable the connection if you dont want to see the icon":
what's the point of that? what if the person on the other side turn on the PC again? maybe he will be trying to message you,to send you something with no succes because of disabled connnction. So he will have to come into your room (or get dressed and come to you at 1:00am because he lives in opposite house) just to tell you "enable the connection because i wanna play Quake 3 with you"
Kinda LAME,isnt it?! THINK before you post please...
kenshin
Ok... has anyone done it successfully?...
imo its just wasting space... and looks kinda ugly... i dont want/need to know when the other node is offline...
aleni wat dll, exe was it that you hacked?

at least let me change the icon ms...

Well . . back in time we go . . .

Anyways sorry to bring this old thread back to life, but I have a problem relating to this topic.

I followed the instructions and successfully disabled the "disconected lan icon" on my wired lan connection

but . .

I have laptop, and when my wireless cannot connect I would also like to disable the wireless "not connected icon"

Trying to get windows to hide the icon is only a temp solution, as it always comes back. What I want is a location to reshack for the wireless "not connected" icon. (I cannot find it in netshell.dll)

Or if there is a freeware program that can permanently kill icons, that does not run in the background, I will then try that.

Any suggestions?

yes.gif and again sorry for bringing this thread back, but I need a little help tongue.gif

It's in xpsp2res.dll, ordinal number 1004, I think.
