Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver have racked up 1,480,980 sales between them on their opening weekend in Japan, Famitsu reports.
Shortages are being reported, so expect some monster (hunting) figures when the Japanese charts hit later this week.

I sort of wish I kept my DS and that I still played Pokemon games. There's a lot to do in them and with online play now I'd actually have people to play against

Many have proclaimed Pokemon dead, this shows Pokemon still has what it takes to be a popular game.
When are they releasing these in Europe?
EDIT:// Nevermind, just checked Spring 2010. Might be a good time to pick up a DS I miss Pokemon!

I would suspect next year between March-April-May, usually how long it takes for the games to get to us.

Also these ARE remakes of what are considered the best ever games, Gold and Silver.
I'm definately picking up a copy of Silver when it's released.

Even a revamped old Pokemon game still sells that much? Why am I not surprised. I think just about every one of my friends played the series while we were growing up and that whole Pokemon rage was about 10 years ago. I think it has passed for the most part in the US but why is it still so popular in Japan?

Because it's a highly established RPG, coming from a highly established company, and being put on a highly established platform.
Why wouldn't it?

The Japanese are crazy gaga over RPGs.

I realize that but doesn't everybody get tired of something after so many iterations and years of being bombarded by it?

But they're not really being "bombarded" by it. Ignoring the different versions of the same game (i.e. red and blue, gold and silver), there has only been 4 different pokemon RPGs, with 2 remakes. All of the other pokemon titles have been spin-offs like Snap, Mystery Dungeon, etc.
Lol, you people are funny.
People clamouring over FF7 remake, the best FF to date (despite there being a whopping 11 of them) = Okay, understandable, awesome, etc
People clamouring over Gold/Silver remake, the best pokemon to date (despite only being 4 of them) = OMG THESE PEOPLE ARE SAD LOSERS
What's the difference?

@The Teej,
- Some people tend to see Pokemon only as a "social phenomenon" that has to fade away sometime. What these people fail to see is that Pokemon is actually an extremely good RPG (very complex game system) with a huge fan base. So far, no version of Pokemon has ever failed to sell millions of copies in the first week.

i would think that , having less games to choose from, the last thing they would want is another remake of one of the four games...
Pokémon!
(If you don't like the game then don't play it, problem solved... )

But unlike FF7 where they pour out a few new FFs every generation (although this seems to be less apparent in this generation), Pokemon always gets only one iteration every generation, and the fans know this. They know demanding a new pokemon game won't happen until the next generation, period. So, they learn to accept a remake of the greatest pokemon game of all time.

Yup, all intact, along with a new area west of Cianwood (The one you surf to with the Fighting gym) including the Safari Zone.
Also, Pal Park is also there for those without DSi's.

I just bought a a DS lite along with Pokemon Diamond - lets just say I'm like Ethan what he is to Everquest.

The thing I missed most about the most recent versions of Pokemon (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum) is the ability to travel to another region. I can't wait to get my hands on the revamped Gold and Silver, revel in some nostalgia.

It angers me that a company can just retool the graphics a bit in a game and pitch it as a totally new game.

Ahahaha, try reading into it more before you make a comment like that.
The advances from Gen II to Gen IV are vast, there's a ton of new features that really mix the game up. One example which is probably one of the most game changing is the physical/special split, before Gen IV moves were either Special or Physical based on their type. Now a move is classified as Physical or Special (So Thunderpunch is Physical). This allows for some older Pokes (Gyarados) to become useful with Physical Water moves (Waterfall).
This isn't just retooling, this is a complete revamp, including features from Crystal, and some stuff that wasn't even in the first games. These games nearly render having the GBA versions useless now (Considering you can catch most of the legends in HGSS).

I would be buying it when it comes to Europe except my DS Lite has developed a graphics corruption problem, less than two years old as well. Ridiculous when my GBC still works as well as the day I got it.

That's odd. My DS Lite still works fine and I've had it since '05 (4 years). My old GB (Yellow) has a graphics problem where you can't see anything on the screen, sounds still works and the buttons do too.

Anyway I did contact Nintendo but they weren't interested. In the EU every purchased has a two year warranty (companies never tell you about it, it is a very secret law). However the Play.com where I bought my DS are out side the EU because they are based in the Channel Islands (technically part of the UK but a Crown Estate). Anyway I refuse to buy anything from Nintendo now.

The new versions (HGSS) contain most Pokemon obtainable in the GBA versions, meaning owning a DSi isn't going to leave you with a half full Pokedex. The actual number of new ones is decreasing each time, with the latest barely cracking 100 I think.
And both Gold/Silver and Crystal had the Day/Night timeline. DPPt brought this back.
