Full Version: iMac 27" benchmarks

I ordered my new iMac 27" on Tuesday to replace my current 24" from September 2006. It's not old, I know, but I kind of maxed out the new iMac (except the processor) and all in all, on paper, it's globally 4 times faster or bigger (i.e. 4x the storage, 4x the memory, 8x the graphics, 2x the number of cores, 60% more pixels...)

I'm getting really excited, but mine will ship in November because I took the Quad-Core one. So for all those who will receive it, just for my curiosity and for the curiosity of other Neowinians, please, post your benchmarks!

I'd suggest Xbench and Geekbench, and also recent games like Sims 3, Spore, etc. And obviously, post your specs please. I tried checking on Xbench's website, but unless the user wrote them, they don't show the specs, so this is not a reliable resource at all. It doesn't tell me any valuable information.

As soon as I receive my iMac, I'll contribute to this thread by posting my benchmarks once my things are pretty much installed smile.gif

I would be interested in these as well, as I am debating whether or not to build a custom PC with w7 (keeping my current MBP) or getting a 27" iMac with decent specs.
Chris
Wow, nice configuration. Enjoy when it arrives. I have the 2008 iMac (before the March 2009 refresh) which is a year old, so I'm not replacing it just yet but I'd be interested in these benchmarks anyway yes.gif.
Elliott
I ordered the exact same configuration as you. biggrin.gif I'll post some Geekbench benchmarks when I get mine.

i havent even seen the new 27in iMacs. the 24s look sweet though so i can only imagine the 27's are even sweeter.

congrats on your purchase smile.gif

I really want one of these things to replace my 2006 iMac. 2gb ram is just not cutting it for me with my pro level photography apps.

The new 27" display have an aspect ratio of 16:9 instead of 16:10 which is something I don't really like.

It's a shame displays are moving towards the 16:9 standard.

WOW, amazing! It doesn't look THAT much bigger, Apple did a nice job making the chin smaller and the 16:9 monitor also doesn't look like it's exaggerated compared to the 24". It's just perfect.

Is it too hard to read on that screen though? According to my calculations, things are going to be 33% smaller on my new 27", but I did this in a hurry and am hoping for a mistake somewhere. Or I'm hoping for Resolution Independence very soon tongue.gif

Also, what's the distance between the aluminum base and the beginning of the chin? It wasn't anywhere on Apple's site, and maybe I could put my M-Audio piano right in that spot.

I thought this thread would get more attention, maybe I started it too early. But a lot of people should have received their new iMac now, they've been out for a week and the shipping time for most of the models is less than 24 hours, unless you take the Quad-Core or customize it.

So, anybody? I'm being benchmarks-hungry tongue.gif

I'm still waiting for mine.... the UPS tracker hasn't been updated in a while for my imac....last time was when it left Alaska for Kentucky 2 days ago....hopefully it should be here this week

Well the benchmarks of all the Core 2 Duo models can't be that much higher than the 2008 and 2009 models. The Core i5 and i7 iMacs won't ship until next month according to the Apple Store.

They might be a bit higher since the core2duo chips used in the new iMac are the desktop version.....but it won't be a big increase like the i5 and i7 are going to give smile.gif

Really?

Yea, they've managed to include the desktop CPUs and GPUs in the new iMac thanks to some incredible engineering in the cooling mechanisms. You can check the iFixit teardown.
.Neo
That's cool. It provides a minimal bump in the benchmarks though when comparing 3.06 GHz to 3.06 GHz.:

There's mine.... http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/179837

It's a shame that the old pc I built over 2 years ago is getting better results (see my sig for specs)...... but I wouldn't go back wink.gif

Wow, I didn't know those were desktop components, that makes me even happier smile.gif

But I just realized last week that they gave me my money back on my credit card, like a complete refund. At first, I thought it was a problem at my bank, but I'm reading things about iMac orders with Core i5 processors being cancelled. When I go to Apple's Online Store though, it says "Not Yet Shipped", and I can still cancel the order.

Does anybody know what's wrong with that!?
.Neo
From what I know Apple hasn't made an official statement as of yet. There have been talks about some update, but nothing concrete as of yet.

Edit This showed up: http://www.macrumors.com/2009/11/09/intel-...egins-shipping/

I dunno. I cancelled my Core i5 iMac and decided to buy a few upgrades for my MBP for now.

Maybe the representative I talked to at Apple cancelled all Core i5 iMacs by accident? laugh.gif

It may have been a clerical error - they don't generally take the money until they ship (they just withhold the funds), so they may have accidentally taken it early. Does seem a bit odd though confused.gif.

Unless you wired the money that is.

Hey, I have an update for you guys. My Core i5 iMac's been shipped this morning, and guess what?

My credit card still has this extra 2500 CAD on it. What's wrong with that? Does it really mean I'm getting an iMac for free? happy.gif

Hahahahaha, that really did make me laugh out loud tongue.gif

It happens that I do exactly this with like 3 of my friends hahaha

Oh yeah by the way I went to the Apple Store on Ste-Catherine yesterday to get my iPhone replaced (the switch for the ringer was ... not fully working) and I saw those beasts. Not the quad-cores, but the other kinds of 27 inch. They are simply IM-PRESS-I-V--E. What I particularly love is that they gain 3 inches of space on the screen, yet they are not taller than their older brother.

Anyone with a Core i7 care to check 'About This Mac' for me. Mine shows up as 2.8 GHz Unknown sad.gif

Yea I know it shows up fine in system profiler. Just curious if anyone else had it too. Couldn't find anything on google.

Just got my Core i5 today smile.gif

I'm still busy setting it up, been doing that since the last 6 hours XD, and then I'll need to reformat my old 24" and set it up for someone. Just for the record, I was extremely busy on it and Xbench scored 185 still. Not bad smile.gif

I noticed no slowdown at all (except for Flash, but was it really surprising that a quad-core 2.66GHz couldn't handle Flash better than a Dual-Core 2.16GHz?) and it has absolutely nothing to do with my old 24"

The monitor is simply gorgeous, I still can't believe this thing is mine hehe

I'll post some serious benchmarks when I'm done.

Just out of curiosity, do you enjoy having both a desktop and a laptop? I cancelled my iMac order because I was a little hesitant about having two machines and trying to keep them in sync, but that Core i5 and 27" screen are really calling to me. tongue.gif

To be fair, I don't really like laptops. I have my MacBook Pro, but couldn't use it every day. I really thought about selling it and instead just getting the Cinema Display, but it was too expensive (hell you can get an awesome iMac 21.5" for this price... almost.

And I can't get away from the speed of a desktop computer like an iMac. Especially with the one that I got now, it has absolutely nothing to do with my MacBook Pro, which was slightly better than my old iMac 24".

I don't end up using my laptop much, it's mainly for school. Whenever there's a huge project or something, or boring classes *cough*, then I decide to bring it and use it.

It really depends on your tastes (desktops VS laptops) and speed requirements IMO... and screen size you're asking for biggrin.gif
Xero
A MobileMe subscription will keep your machines in sync. It's works very well I use it to keep my work machine matched with my home.
PsykX
Well, well.

I've done a benchmark with XBench, while having a bunch of apps opened, but still. You can compare my old and my new iMac here :
http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=210016

Right now, the biggest downside, IMO, is the lack of Blu-Ray. Next is the non-ergonomic-but-cool-nonetheless mouse. Next is... what, nothing maybe?

Other than that, I noticed that they lowered the minimal setting of luminosity in the new iMac, meaning that when I'll wake up at night, my eyes won't die. Very good thing.

I tried The Sims 3, which I could hardly play at minimum with the older iMac, at full resolution and maximum settings and it was fine smile.gif I think I was getting around 30fps or so, so it's a very nice gaming machine also smile.gif

My 27-inch Quad Core iMac arrives Wednesday biggrin.gif So excited to have it.

Loaded up the TNT Express website - entered my tracking number and iMac is currently on it's way, just left Hong Kong!

Xbench is not a good app it's out dated try Geekbench, the highest score I got was 13154 on 10.6.2

How did you get so high? I got 6578 in Geekbench 32-bit. The only change I did was to force the kernel to boot in 64-bit. I have no idea why such a new computer doesn't do it by default already.

Edit : Well, I got 7666 in Geekbench 64bit. Pretty good !

And the older iMacs 10,1, they scored about 4250, which shows in the latest iMacs an increase of over 50% in the benchmarks (32-bit) and about 80% (64-bit), over the last generation. So how did you manage such a high score? It would represent a 200% increase tongue.gif

But yeah, I knew Xbench was totally outdated, I just prefer using it though. It's a stupid move from my part, but I guess I never learn.

Btw : I am still very satisfied smile.gif Hell, I'm thinking about doing a whole review, but I know I'd give this thing a 5-star rating automatically. The two things I've mentioned though (no Blu-Ray and non-ergonomic mouse), they still apply and can get on my nerve soon... I could as well add that we still don't have a magnet to place the remote control, but this is gone since the aluminum iMacs came out.
