I was wondering if Limewire is still legal to use to download music. Does the RIAA monitor it as well? Thanks for the help in advance.

No, it isn't legal, but they are not monitoring it much yet

I don't that the application itself is illegal, just what it's being used for.
So it is "kind of" safe to download music then???

If you really want something off it, then by all means download off limewire. Just make sure however that you don't share anything.

You mean it was legal?
you wouldn't be able to buy it if it wasn't legal

if you really want something go back to ftps riaa hasn't ever gone after them
The RIAA goes after file sharers. Don't share files with the file names of their contracted artists and you'll be ok (from them anyway).
The RIAA used to go after FTPs all the time back in the late 1990s, their focus has since shifted to P2P distributors.

How come they never said anything about it back then?

Less widespread.
I use WinMX myself, and close off the port in my firewall to prevent sharing (but it still looks like I do, so people don't cancel on me). I hope it still doesn't count as sharing in their eyes.

P2P programs aren't illegal. It's illegal to download copywrighted material (music, movies, etc.) with P2P programs (or any other file sharing for that matter).
