The catch is you can never transfer your "freely" obtained Windows 10 license to a new PC. So essentially all Microsoft is doing is postponing the moment you have to get a new license from now to later. In my case my Windows 8 Pro license hit the end of the line with my current Asus notebook. After that I either have to deal with a new notebook's bloatware, revert back to Windows 8 Pro from Windows 10 (if possible driver wise) or purchase a new Windows 10 Pro license.
Once you ditch your current PC the situation is the same as it always been.
It's my opinion that if you give something away for "free" and promote it as such to the general public, just give it away for free and allow people to use it indefinitely. That includes when they're getting a new PC a few years down the road.

I prefer using my own clean copy of Windows 8 Pro compared to Windows 8 with Bing from Asus, because of all the bloatware. But apparently there's no way to use that in combination with a new PC after a year. I honestly don't get why Microsoft is being to damn difficult with these things. Just give everyone a new product key the first year, instead of raising all these hurdles. The way I see it, Microsoft is just postponing the moment you have to buy a new license from right now to somewhere in the future.

Windows 10: What happens after one year when I get a new PC?
I upgraded my Windows 8 Pro license to Windows 10 Pro for free. What happens after, let's say, two years from now when I get a new PC and want to transfer that license  to it? Do I loose Windows 10 Pro and have to revert back to Windows 8 Pro again? Since Microsoft doesn't give us a Windows 10 product key and apparently works with storing your motherboard ID in their database I have no idea how this is supposed to work.
I apologize in advance if this question has already be answered, thus far I haven't found a straight answer.
