alexalex
Today, Andy Lees, president of Microsoft's Windows Phone division, boasted about 18,000 applications in 7 months. He can only wish for this kind of future: 500,000 applications approved to Apple's iOS app store in about three years. This isn't even a fair fight. The elephant in the room could squash the mouse just too easily. Developers 148Apps, Chillingo and Chomp have put together a tidy infographic showing off Apple's App Store progress since its debut in July 2008 : http://c3316209.r9.cf0.rackcdn.com/500kAppsInfographic.png . According to the inforgraphic, there are 85,569 unique developers represented at the App Store, and there is an average 4.6 apps per developer. The value of all apps currently live is $891,982.24. There are 244,720 paid apps and 174,966 free ones. http://www.betanews.com/joewilcox/article/In-the-battle-of-mobile-apps-its-Apples-500000-to-Microsofts-18000/1306259661
MarkusDarkus
What's the point of half a million apps. Yuor never gonna see them all let alone use them. There is only so many ways you can use a device that there must be an unhealthy amount of apps that do the same thing. Even 18k is too much. They need to stop comparing the length of their 'app fellatio' and think about how to use it. Arkaic 1 Share
Zaic
Got to catch them all... 15 quality apps are more than enough for majority of users and a few games once in while Carbon Fiber 1 Share
winaxter
Seems flawed to me. It says 500,000 at the top yet at January 22 2011 there's 350,00 apps only. Highly doubt they gained 150,000 apps in 4 months. Edit: even at the bottom for may is says 148k free + 248k paid
Lachlan
i love my xbox live games on windows phone .. way better then trotting though thousands of games.. less of a chance to get ripped off .. also microsoft is trying to get people to upgrade there websites for IE9 which will also work nicely on WP7, there is a few million apps in a few years.. Apps are pointless once smartphones can acually use the web correctly
Robbeke
App store launched in july 2008. End of november (5,5 months later) they had 10000. Microsoft Market place has 18000 apps after 7 months. What's the problem? Looks like they are well on track to compete, even better statistically they go at a higher pace than when Apple's store launched. The point is to keep this momentum/speed and also combine it with quality apps. Wait until the Mango update gets released and dev's get another 1000+ API's to toy with, including performance tools, sockets and SQL services to name a few. Actually, I consider this good news regarding the platform. It's doing good. Eric 1 Share
Lachlan
not fair to compare an old OS's apps to a new ones.. kinda like saying Windows 98 has more programs available then Google chrome OS therefore it is better.. Well no its not HeroDavies, Duffydemon, Carbon Fiber and 5 others 8 Share

The app marketplace is thriving a whole lot more than when apple opened it's app store. I would expect nothing else than Microsoft to be doing better than Apple in that sense. XIII
It's like comparing 10 iFarts apps on iPhone with 1 "I pooped on my iPhone" app on WP7. I would take the later, k thanks bye...
Allan
There are probably close to a million Windows Mobile apps out there, and 99.999% are free ... just download the .cab file to your computer, and move it to the SDCard then install. Voila.

techbeck
So, WP7 has been out for a short time and iPhone for years...and they are comparing the amount of apps? Seriously? Besides...who the **** cares about 500k apps. I would be satisfied with 2k apps. Are you really going to DL and install that many? How many are crap/fart apps (there are on most platforms)? And how many apps do the same damn thing as hundreds of others? I mean, how many calculator, GPS, weather, browsers......are out there?
Neo003
I could hardly find 2 good app, not to mention at the same time length apple app were little over 10,000 while WP7 has 18,000.
andrew_f
Slightly off-topic, but has anybody else found Windows Phone apps to be as well polished as iOS apps? I was expecting them to be more like Android ones (which normally feel unpolished to me) but they're on the most part really well done.
nohone
This from the same person who just yesterday was complaining because of a comparison between Apple and Microsoft. Just another Apple fan upset because other companies dare challenge the all mighty Apple and compete.

That was probably at the very beginning of iOS. Doesn't have much relevance now. And that's only by units sold, not total revenue.

DiamondFootprint
It's a crazy comparison to say the least, doesn't make much sense to compare an OS thats been out for 3+ years to one thats less than a year old in terms of numbers. What it does show, however, is that how extremely lucrative App's actually are and how much consumers want them and how much they are willing to pay. Apple does have a head start here obviously because they started the whole app craze but Windows Phone is looking good!

neufuse Veteran Posted May 25, 2011 Veteran Share Posted May 25, 2011 eh so what, whats the comparison between windows desktop apps and OSX desktop apps again? and why is this meaningless? because people use just a few apps ever, and the quality ones are generally ported cross platform I can only use 10,000 compass apps... 3,000 flashlight apps..... 50,000 news readers.... 70,000 games.... but then I'm superhuman
