Super 8

Copy-and-pasting my review from io9:

I just got back from seeing it, and I'd say it easily met my expectations. I don't think it surpassed them, but it was a good movie, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The movie is very exposition-heavy. If you can't tolerate a very story-driven movie, then stick to Michael Bay (not knocking him, if that's your thing, that's your thing!). The first three-fourths of the movie are fairly slow moving, but it progressively picks up in each act. The final act is a completely different pace than everything else, but it's as well-constructed as you'd imagine.

I also have to emphasize that the acting in the movie is pretty superb all-around. Save for the opening lines of the movie (which I felt were cringe-worthy, both in writing and delivery), the actors were all superb. That said, though, there are definitely some very poorly written lines in the movie. I actually thought the relationship between Alice and her overprotective father was fine -- a pretty standard affair, actually. I didn't think the hinted-at abusive relationship was handled well, but other than that it worked pretty well.

All the statements I've heard saying it's E.T. meets Cloverfield are highly accurate, I think. If that entices you, I think you'll love the movie.

I'd say it's a 4/5, possibly a 4.5/5, but I need a second viewing.

I saw it Friday I enjoyed it but it was not as good as some make it out to be.

I say 7 out of 10.

However its the kind of movie that I think I will like even more after another viewing or two.

Its a good movie I just would not put it up there with the likes of ET for example.

Yeah, I don't think it's going to go down as a classic like E.T., but I do think it's a good movie and lived up to what I thought (but, as I stated in my review, didn't surpass my expectations). I definitely need another viewing, though.

I've give it about the same. It wasn't much cup of tea. I am more a Michael Bay fan, I guess.

I actually give the movie a 10/10. It made me laugh, made me cry, made me cringe and smile. It was a little bit of action, a little bit of drama. A little Sci-fi and a little Mystery. A true Genre buster. I was locked on to Joe emotionally from the beginning of the movie, and every emotion he gave off. I was GLAD it wasn't a monster movie. No "Michael Bay" movies for me. Even Cloverfield is weak in my opinion, because you don't really CARE about the people in the movie.... A good movie makes you care about the characters before it puts them through the wringer :-p. The bittersweet ending with locket really tugged at my heartstrings. There really was nothing I can complain about with this movie. Seen it 3 times already, and plan on seeing it once more just to break my record for most times seeing one movie on the big screen.

I LOVED this movie. I don't expect this to win best film at the academy awards, and sure it has some moments that were lacking and didn't mesh together very smoothly, but overall the nostalgic feel that everyone talks about trumps any of the miniscule flaws this movie has. I felt more of a mix between E.T and stand by me, and i felt like a kid again watching this movie. I really can't say enough good things about how the movie makes you feel, if you're in your 30's and remember watching those movies as a child and how amazing they were back then, then this movie will not disappoint. I honestly can't remember the last time i felt like this after watching a movie.

I liked the movie for entertainment value... by that, I mean allowing myself to go brain dead

to watch it. And in that state of mind, it was easily 4.5 of 5 stars.

Yeah it was good...but near the end it seemed a little too convenient...the rest of it I liked though, so probably a 4/5

I'd give it a 7/10

It had some magic, it just went a bit too over board. I'd still rather re-watch Goonies or ET. Super 8 was just a bit too over the top.. I love stoy, i enjoyed some of the characters.. everyone knows the kid with fire crackers that they grew up with but man.. the action scenes were a little too hectic and i never got to enjoy the flick because it felt like they were trying to shock me rather then entertain me and then end with a a twist of fate lovey dovey i'm all peaceful now ending. meh heh

i thought it was really good, especially because i went to see it knowing NOTHING about what the story was about. i'd give it 9/10...

it's definitely worth seeing again, i might even buy it when it comes out

Sequel to ET.

I did not consciously realize that Spielberg was behind this movie, but it dawned on me fairly early into it.

Kind of seemed like some scenes were missing.

My description:

ET's older brother lands on Earth, and just wants to go home.

4/10 stars seems fair.

Watched this last night. The film as a whole was quite good.

Nothing like E.T though so I am not sure where the references are coming from for that?!?! Overall it was very enjoyable but a classic it is not!

Super 8 is just like the Goonies with aliens mixed with E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. C'mon Spielberg, Super 8 and now Cowboys & Aliens? Are you running out of ideas?

4/10

It is just like the goonies in that it has children in it!

It is just like Aliens in that it has an alien in it!

It is just like E.T in that it has an alien in it!

The film is really nothing like any of the above though and I am struggling with understanding the reason people are relating them...

Super 8 Review ? A bit like Goonies?

........Super 8 captures that same quality and honestly gives it a new spark. The similarities don?t stop there. Super 8 has 5 boys who are locked together in trying to make a ?mint? horror film, Goonies has 5 boys who are locked together in the search of that damn treasure....

'Goonies' fans find fun similarities in 'Super 8'

"['Super 8'] was a movie with a twist," said Alex Richards, from St. George. "It was kind of a futuristic 'Goonies.' It was 'E.T.' and 'The Goonies' rolled into one." The boys in "Super 8" resembled the look of the boys in "The Goonies." "Super 8" takes place in 1979, which would explain the similar hair and clothing styles of the children in both "The Goonies" and "Super 8."

'Super 8' an unabashed love note to 'Goonies?-era summer movies

Super 8 is more than nostalgia, though. Yes, it captures the feel of a steel town in 1979, and the Spielbergian sheen of a movie these children might have sat through twice on a hot Saturday afternoon. It's also a movie of here-and-now thrills, goosed by judicious CGI effects that never overpower the humanity of the situation.

Well, I watched this last night and it reminded me of none of the above. If anything, it was more like Stand By Me.

Watched Super 8 the other days and the first thing I thought was The Goonies. Good movie 7/10.
