Android sales set to slump

As RIM, Nokia whither, Android set to slump

Boy Genius Report, quoting Yankee Group market research, reports that a study of European mobile buyers concludes that 40 percent plan to get an iPhone. The surprising bit is that Android attracted only 19 percent of potential smartphone shoppers.

?These findings highlight the continued strength of Apple in the European smartphone market and, in particular, its phenomenal brand appeal,? said Yankee Group research vice president, Declan Lonergan. ?The data also highlights the enormous challenges faced by Nokia and RIM to retain mind share and market share in this increasingly dynamic and competitive marketplace.?

Yeah, Blackberry (17 percent) and Nokia (15 percent) are still plummeting, though they look surprisingly competitive next to Android. And, isn?t that an interesting thought?

Here in the land of milk and Honey Nut Cheerios, Android devices are expected to post a first ever decline in market share.

Another Apple PR crap..

with 400k activations a day (last number, it's even bigger) there is no slump. The only slump that can happen is iPhone going down as Nokia/WP7 is going up, not the other way around.

Android passes 100 million activations and billion app downloads every 60 days.

How anyone can say that Android is going on a slump with a straight face is totally beyond me.

Considering reports are streaming out almost every month saying how Android's growth appears to be still accelerating this is probably bs.

There are other reports that show iPhone outpacing Android in US.....

...For now, the battle is between iPhone and Android. Until last month, all signs were pointing to Android taking over, but this month's stats show a slightly different picture. iPhone is actually making a comeback. Android market-share is actually dropping! The reasons for this are hard to pin-point, but Verizon customers are falling in love with the iPhone 4 (16.9 million iPhones sold in 90 countries)....

Analyst: Android US smartphone share drop to continue

After Google's Android experienced its first loss of market share in a region since 2009 during the March quarter, one analyst believes Apple's iPhone will continue to win back share in the U.S. smartphone market.

In a note sent to investors on Monday, Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf predicted Android would regain share in the June and September quarters before a "material decline" in the December quarter following the expected launch of the iPhone 5. "In our opinion, this is just the beginning of Android?s share loss in the U.S.," Wolf wrote.

Android's share of the U.S. smartphone market fell from 52.4 percent in the December quarter to 49.5 percent last quarter. The drop was the first sequential loss of market share in any region for Android since it began its "growth rampage" in 2009.

Wolf attributed the dip to the launch of the iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network, while also acknowledging that a "substantial percentage" of Verizon subscribers appear to be waiting for the next iPhone before upgrading. Verizon has indicated that it will receive the next iPhone at the same time as AT&T. Wolf also speculates that "the iPhone could launch on the Sprint and T-Mobile networks this fall," which could give Apple another boost in share....

This is clearly just a load of marketing crap. Most consumers in Europe call every smartphone an 'iPhone'...Yankee Group has seized on this core misunderstanding as evidence of a sales slump, despite every other indicator disagreeing with their findings.

Not meant to be a non-reading ignorant fool, but I really shouldn't be here for long so I really have no idea what either links say.

But the links you provide, one is a blog, one is "Apple insider". I really can't consider either as proof. The blog itself show no evidence whilst I ideally love to links on Apple Insider that isn't linking to its own site as form of evidence.

Post some credible sources and maybe people will take you seriously. Making a quote from AppleInsider garbage.

And look on the front page today. 500k android activations per day. So yea, they are not slowing down.

A blog (a blend of the term web log)[1] is a type of website or part of a website. Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites.[2]

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (art blog), photographs (photoblog), videos (video blogging), music (MP3 blog), and audio (podcasting). Microblogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts.

I like that you dismiss AppleInsider because they are not credible (not sure why because they are quoting a third party), but then you cited Andy Rubin's 500,000 number.

AppleInsider and Andy Rubin are both biased.

So are BGR and Barrons, biased as well :

" iPhone continues to be the best-selling smartphone at nearly every store we surveyed with iPhone sell-through about matching all [Google (GOOG)] Android handsets combined at most stores."

Why not? Turn about fare play right? Besides, it would be pretty stupid for the head of a company to make a claim and not be able to back it up. I am sure he can backup what he said. But something tells me that wont be good enough for some people...or companies.

And quoting Apple Insider about Android is like quoting Phandroid.com on iPhone sales.
