Netflix officially separates DVD, streaming pricing

Netflix officially separates DVD, streaming pricing; $15.98 and up for both

Netflix hadn't hinted at any upcoming plans to change the services it offers, but NewTeeVee spotted an unadvertised DVD-only plan on its site a few days ago, and an anonymous tipster from within the company indicates that's just the start. The DVD.Netflix.com page offers unlimited DVDs by mail, per month (one at a time) for $7.99, which slots it between the standard DVD & streaming combo plans and a $4.99 offering that gives just two DVDs per month. According to the tipster we spoke to, Netflix is planning to change its pricing entirely, by also implementing a streaming only plan with no discs for $7.99, and jacking up the minimum pricetag for combined services to $15.98 from the current $9.99 it has charged since November. They indicated the change would take place tomorrow night around 9 p.m., with customers notified by email and no plans to grandfather any of the old pricing setups along. With aggressive expansion plans pressing forward and its costs to acquire content rising sharply, hiking the price by 50 percent on many of its 20 million+ subscribers could be the easiest way to make the numbers add up, it could be just those subscribers who are left to determine exactly what Watch Instantly streaming (or DVD access) is worth to them.

Update: Just that fast, Netflix has officially announced these changes to its pricing plans. Just like our information indicated, DVD only or streaming only unlimited plans are available for $7.99 each per month, or $15.98 together. Existing members can float on their current plans until September but new members will see these rates effective immediately.

ITs about $18 for 1 blu-ray and streaming.

I don't like this one bit. We use streaming far more than our one at a time DVD, but we still have use of the DVD service since there are lots of movies on DVD that are not on streaming, namely recently released movies that we said could wait until they came to DVD. Going from having to wait a few months for the DVD to waiting one to several years for it to come to streaming sucks. Bad enough I had two wait over a month for Warner Bros. films.

This is too much. It is essentially a 100% price increase...

Their streaming catalog still lacks a lot and can't wholly replace the DVD side...

Looks like I too will be dropping Netflix on this one. Now to decide if I should kill it all or just keep the DVD side.

My parents have a both plan that they have had forever, I wonder if they are going to go to an all disc version now because they do not use the streaming I do :p

agreed, when i first signed up it was 9.99 for DVD/Stream, then increased, then increased again, now increasing again.

Decreased my subscription plan every time, canceling this time as refuse to pay the same for 1/2 the service ( either DVD Only, or Stream Only )

I use my Netflix constantly, but seriously... this is just lame. I use both the Blu-ray (three per month) and streaming parts of the service on a daily basis, but these prices are getting pretty damn expensive. I understand they want to keep increasing their streaming catalog, but I'm not sure if it's worth it, because it's extremely rare to see any even remotely recent movies on Watch Instantly.

I'm interested to see the new Xbox/Zune movie pass that's rumored to be coming out. I may ditch Netflix for that, given Zune's current selection of rentals/downloads.

agreed, especially since they agreed to delay their disk's by a month, they cant stream it for at least the same amount of time. and i have only seen 1 recent release on stream, it was from a movie that did so poorly in theaters it was on dvd a month later. other then that its Canceled TV show reruns. oooo ahhhh you press released about acquiring a deal for millions so you can stream Buffy and Angel,,, WTF

Not only that, but the new ones that are put on stream, are not HD and do not have HD sound either.
