Whats your favorite Cyberpunk books?

Recommended Posts

Anything by William Gibson or Pat Cadigan

A lot of Cyberpunk themes in the works of PKD - esp. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Blade Runner)

Manga like Akira, Battle Angel Alita and Ghost in the Shell

Time to broaden your selections. May I (strongly) recommend William Gibson's Neuromancer as a jumping off point? Classic.

?The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.?

-first line of Neuromancer

It's the first of the Sprawl (aka Matrix) trilogy, consisting of Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

I'm always looking for new reading, I'm currently on Count Zero.

My favorites are:

SnowCrash Amazon

Daemon/Freedom Amazon

Neuromancer Amazon

I also liked the Takeshi Kovacs series. Amazon

What about you guys?

I find it funny that you would point out Snow Crash but not mention Cryptonomicon. That was a much better, though extremely long, story.

Snowcrash and Peter F. Hamiltons Mandel Trilogy, which should count as cyberpunk. except for those and I think Neuromancer(I think I read it) I don't think I've read much cyberpunk despite being a fan, mostly more SciFi stuff.

Big Shadowrun fan though, even though I have no one to game with :)

oh yeah, the NetForce books by Tom Clancy, including the netForce explorers. not quite cyberpunk but sort of. been a while since I read them though. and I prefer SnowCrash and Mandel way above them but

Great suggestion, but at 900+ pages I classify Cryptonomicon as a 'vacation book' ;)

900... that's like a weekend book or something.

I suppose you meant summer vacation type of book. But I highly recommend finding the time to read it.

Another book that I thought was good was The Diamond Age also by Neal Stephenson.

Also, the Shadowrun books also have some great cyberpunk elements to them.

Another big fan of William Gibson here. I've been hooked since I read Neuromancer way back when and haven't looked back. Idoru was absolutely fantastic and would make for great movie. He is a true genius when it comes to blending the here and now with the future into a place that is completely familiar and at the same time fantastical.

I'd also suggest looking at Tom Cool's Secret Realms. War-simulation / virtual reality meets science-fiction with cyberpunk-ish overtones. Not a bad read at all.

I'll just echo what others have said - Gibsons books are referenced regularly for a reason. Though personally his last three books, aren't as good [imo]. With regards Neal Stephenson - start off with something like, like Snow Crash, then if you like it, move onto his other books. His latest - Reamde, comes out soon and ... Yeah, it's interesting ;)

I personally think Neuromancer was the only shining star of Gibson's career. The rest are ok, but Neuromancer is great.

Also look for:

Hardwired - Walter Jon Williams (most of his books are good)

Anything by Bruce Sterling

For Steampunk: you can't read it unless you've ready The Difference Engine by Gibson/Sterling
