All the Mayans did was figure out that the Earth has about a 26,000 year axial cycle. And then for some reason, they divided that up into 5 "ages".
December 2012 is the end of one of the ages and 2013 starts the next. Nothing more, nothing less. People survived the past few "ages", so why would we expect anything to happen?
We should also remember that ancient societies worshiped mythical "gods" and wasted their lives trying to please those gods, so it's pretty silly to believe anything they thought up.
But I suppose it's not like people today are much different.

• Okay, the Mayan calendar has been proven to be more accurate than our Gregorian calendar for one. Even though it's a slight variation facts are facts.
  
• I remember saying the Mayans and other ancient civilizations were more advanced than us as far as astronomy. Well, that's true even if it was a blanketed statement. The ancient Sumerians had advanced knowledge of the solar system without a huge telescope which in my opinion is impressive. They describe the color of planets like Uranus BEFORE Voyager Two in 1986. They also put on stone tablets the setup of the solar system with the sun being in the center which we didn't figure out until Galileo in 1633.
  
• Science has proven, which I am still on the fence about because I haven't found 100% SOLID proof yet but, the planets will align putting the Earth in the middle of the "Dark Rift". Proven might have been the wrong word.

1. Doesn't really matter what's accurate. Sure a year is technically 365.5 days, but making 1 day 24 hours is convenient for everybody. The official foot measurement (which was decided on by a King, I believe), might not be exactly the same distance today, but again, it doesn't really matter. Living by the exactness of science is just going to complicate things.

2. Yeah I'll agree that for the time, it was impressive what they knew. You also have to consider that many of the scientific ideas were frowned upon by the church, so if a scientist would say otherwise, they would be killed. I believe Galileo was one of the bold ones to stand up against the church and put down the solid facts.

3. I think all of those ideas were pretty far from the truth. I also heard somewhere that December 2012 would be the exact time when the Earth was blocked from the center of the galaxy. So then they predicted that our gravity and magnetic fields would get screwed up somehow. In the end, I think it's all a bunch of BS.

I guess I've been a sceptic for too long, it's hard to wrap my head around why people believe in stuff like this


Edit: perhaps I should clarify: I love Sci-Fi, video games and works of fiction and things like that in general. The earlier post was more about trully believing in alien abductions and **** like that.
