[Ubuntu] Sound popping issue

On a recent install of Ubuntu, on my HP Pavilion dv6500 I'm experiencing random popping sounds from my laptop speakers.

My audio card is a Conexant cx20549.

The problem can be re-created by logging in. It always creates the same popping upon first booting up then logging in. The same rhythm, too.

Changing the volume also triggers it. Finally, the speakers still pop if there are speakers plugged in.

I've Googled around for the past few days and either the solution presented to me confuses the hell out of me, as I have little knowledge in this new environment, or the solution just doesn't work. What I've learned is that most users of this laptop, or at least similar models, have issues with the sound.
