Ohio man meets 13-year-old girl on PlayStation

Recommended Posts

Winter Haven, Florida - An Ohio man was arrested after allegedly traveling to Florida to meet up with a 13-year-old girl he first met playing video games online.

Police were called to the Winter Haven Public Library Saturday afternoon when someone saw baggage sitting in the women's restroom. Arriving officers found the 13-year-old outside of the building with several pieces of luggage. As she was questioned, Carl Sampson, 25, approached and told police that he was the girl's friend and was there to take her back to Ohio with him.

Police discovered that the two met online through video games on the Sony PlayStation 3. They communicated this way multiple times.

The girl reportedly told Sampson that she was 18 years old, but Sampson says he thought she may have been 17 after seeing a photo she sent to him. The victim knew Sampson was 25 years old.

Police say Sampson offered to come to Florida to take her back with him to get to know each other better, and hopefully something more might come of the relationship in the future.

Sampson was arrested on charges of Traveling to Meet A Minor, Interfering With Child Custody and Contributing To the Delinquency of A Minor.

While what he did was not only illegal but morally messed up, what about her? I bet ya not a damn thing will happen to her for lieing about her age.

As an adult, I'd say the responsibility is on him - the assumption being that kids are not going to make responsible decisions. But she did lie yes!

However, Ohio to Florida for a girl? Really????

I dunno, I think he was either completely dense, or he really did think she was 18 and all was good and legal....

If he was being some sort of deviant, he would have took off at the first sight of cops, not tell them he was talking her out of state.

This is illegal?!?!?!?!

Yeah, police are desperate to charge somebody with something.

I guess grandma can't visit her grand kids.

Soon it will be illegal to travel, period.

Creepy!

He technically didn't do anything yet, but we all know what the next step is. Good thing they were caught early.

technically she or her parents should be in some trouble as well being that a 13 year old would not have access to that sort of ability on the PS3 if they truthfully agreed to the EULA for the PS3 she is too young.

Minority Report anyone ?

I'm not so sure about it. Why would a pedo tell the police he was there to bring the girl back to ohio? If the girl really lied about his age and she looks older than her age on the photo then i don't see a problem here as long as the police caught him before he had enough time to realise she was younger.

A man and a woman i play WoW with actually meet online while playing WoW and the guy travelled from Missouri to Floride to meet her. I think the woman is 19 yo or 20 yo and the guy mid 20. Had the woman lied about his age ...

I feel bad for the guy. It isn't like he was some creepy old man going after some 13 year old. He was a 25 year old thinking he was going to go see an 18 year old, which isn't at all an uncommon age difference to be dating.

It sounded like he didn't get too far until arrested. Sadly, he will be labelled as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

At least with scenario sting operations like "To Catch a Predator" they make sure that they have evidence of the perpetrator being fully aware that they are going to go see a minor before making an arrest.

I think that the police did the right thing by pointing out she was a minor, but they should have just sent him home.

Agreed. Looking at the whole story, someone called the police due to suspicious luggage. Smart thing to do since going through unknown packages of stuff just isn't smart. That means the police were there in squad cars and uniform, not undercover.

The guy approached the officers, again, officers in uniform, knowing they are police, and told him exactly what he was doing there. While some criminals are pretty dense, it seems unlikely a pedo would just walk up to a uniformed officer and tell them he was there to pick up a child and take them to another state.

Yes, very much so. Michigan has an online task force where officers go online pretending to be minors, and if propositioned they set up a sting op. They use young looking decoy officers at the meet, but just showing up is enough.

But the online task force discloses that they are minors. They have evidence that shows that the perp was looking to hook up with a minor and knew that it was a minor. That didn't appear to happen here (according to the article), as this guy thought he was going to hook up with an 18 year old and the police are going to have a hard time showing that his intentions were different other than him admitting that based on the photo he thought she might be 17.

That is what sucks about this. She manipulated a man to come take her away from her home. A lot of men that are not very lucky at love are easily manipulated by any girl who give them a little attention. I think he's more of the victim here of bad luck. It was stupid of him... but it isn't the first or last time that guy does something stupid for a girl.

except they intentionally say they're underage and make sure the offender is logged saying sexual stuff to a minor and has intent. This story does not match that description.

This is why when you meet a chick for the first time you cover your ****ing ass by asking for a driver license to verify the age.

because those can't be faked. it wouldn't have changed the outcome of this apparently. the guy thought she was of age and yet he is the one at fault somehow. comes from a society who automatically assumes all guys are pedos and all girls are innocent angels, even when they clearly aren't.
