guitmz
Hello Neowin! I just got my Nexus S (should be in my hands by tomorrow). As I've never got a Android device (I own a iPod Touch 3G), I was wondering if any of you here owns a Nexus S or is familiar with it to give me some tips to startup.. Like some apps, customizations, tweaks, etc.. Thanks and sorry if is a dumb request :)

ichi
My experience with my Nexus S: -The camera software is a bit buggy, so bear in mind you just wont be able to shoot videos in poor light conditions. The video preview looks great, but as soon as you hit the button to start recording it darkens a lot for some reason. -While the default launcher was good enough for me, I found that LauncherPro is a tinny little bit more responsive. I installed it and set it up to behave like the default launcher (the free version is enough for that, although I bought the pro version to try the widgets). -I've replaced the default Gallery app with QuickPic. It doesn't have the fancy 3D effects but loads all the photo previews instantly, with the default Gallery you have to wait some seconds until all the thumbs are loaded. -The default music player isn't that great either. It suffices, but I prefer Songbird or Winamp. There are plenty of players to choose from in the market anyway. -Take care of the screen, mine has a somewhat noticeable vertical scratch already. Everything else is fine as it is by default, IMO. It works great so I don't think there's any need to mess with rooting and custom ROMs unless you really feel like it for geeky reasons. still1
Here are some APP i use and the reason why!! Google Translate -- ad free and can be used as a translator and dictionary... i have not seen a good ad free dic in market so far File Expert - again ad free and one of the best if you are looking for a file manager and its free. Nexus Pro from Honeycomb is a live wallpaper and its very good.... i like it. ColorNote Notepad Notes - again ad free and one of the best. evernote is good too but i never needed online sync so I use this. if you need to sync notes between diff device look at evernote. Google+ - its a big app but useful if you use G+ GasBuddy - Find Cheap Gas - for finding cheap fuel station in your location. Pulse - ONE OF THE BEST NEWS READER AND ITS VERY GOOD I RECOMMEND THIS. Iris - Siri like app if you are interested. Shazam or Sound Hound - ever listened to a song in your car or somewhere and wondered what that song was?? this is your soluton. both app are good use one. Nexus is pure Google so you dont have to worry about any crapware... Camera has not got a lot of features but i think with ICS releasing that will be solved. nekkidtruth
There is an app I use that is so underrated that I very rarely see anyone mentioning it. It's actually quite sad as this app is beyond awesome. It's called Timeriffic. It's basically a profile manager depending on the time of day. For instance, 15 minutes before work, my phone switches to vibrate, turns on wifi and turns off 3g. 5 minutes after my shift at work is done, my phone flips to full volume, turns wifi off and turns 3g back on. There are some other features as well but I can't stress enough how awesome it is to not have to worry about turning those things on/off on my phone constantly.
