Android: How to flash kernel?

Recommended Posts

I just downloaded the latest version of the Quasar kernel for stock LG Optimus Black. However no instructions were included. Anyone here knows how to flash a kernel into stock without wipe?

Have to be (at minimum) rooted, and using CWM (clockwork mod) Recovery, or a CWM Based Recovery)

so download Clockwork Mod, and install the CWM Recovery from inside Clock Work mod. Then you boot into recovery, and use the options to install the zip from either (sd or internal [where ever you saved it]).

^^ Yup, first you need to flash ClockWorkMod, then enter recovery and tell it to flash "a zip from the SDCard", - Not update.zip make sure the kernel is on the SDCard and flash it that way.

Once it has flashed select the reboot option in CWM

1. Download ROM Manager from market

2. With ROM Manager, install CWM

3. Put new kernel (in zip) onto your phone (SD, or preferably internal storage, not sure what that phone uses, SD will need to be mounted in CWM probably if you use that)

4. Reboot to CWM, choose flash zip from sdcard, choose zip and flash.
