Suggest a dual band router

Recommended Posts

Firstly thanks to neowin members for suggesting me NAS. Now I am in search of router.

My requirements are

1) Dual band with 5Ghz support

2) pure performance

3) should work in OSX and Windows environment

4) Gigabit Ethernet ports

Money not a concern and DD-WRT firmware not required but if supported is a plus.

I listed following

1) Linksys E4200

2) Netgear WNDR3700

3) Time Capsule

But I am not really happy with their performance.

The Linksys E4200 or the Asus RT-56U (i think is the name) are the ones i'd go for. The Netgear 4500 too is another top boss.

The Linksys, Asus and the Netgear 3700 you have all support (even if it's beta) DD-WRT.

I'm fairly certain there is no development of DD-WRT for the Asus RT-N56U.

With that said, I love mine with the stock firmware. Can't fault it.

Good thing you didnt get the e4200 - that thing is real problematic - or was & they did some effective firmware updates.

I have the WNDR3700 - and can tell you its great - fast & full of features - but it has its shortcomings (USB) -

Get the WNDR4500 ($180) - more speed and USB3.0 port - whats not to like ?

D-link Dir -825

LOL

prime - yeah you're right - I never put those 2 together :pinch:

That blinking light was enough for me to give it to someone else - let them have that problem.

Oscar - you're gonna have to do better - your 1st post on neowin was bad - almost a complete FAIL.

I am not giving you a complete FAIL because it was on topic - and wasnt SPAM -

But D-Link sucks - no ifs, ands, or buts - they suck.

What?

- I use a D-Link DAP-1522 wireless bridge and it works perfectly, I can't fault it.

- I also had a DIR-655 and it was fantastic until I inevitably bricked it. To this day, it is still one of the best selling 802.11n routers on the market.

- Then there's the DIR-665 which nearly tops the charts in 5Ghz/40Mhz performance, for people looking for raw streaming performance.

But, TEX4S says they suck, so just ignore me.

But since you owned one - you owning one isnt hardly conclusive - but I understand your feelings if you're a little miffed at what I said - its OK - now you know better ;)

Of course it's not just you, that's silly.... It's you and the rest of the minority.

I'd be interested in hearing why you think all D-Link products suck, though.

Shotta - that is awesome ! I posted about this previously - but I got one of the 1st E4200 (before they hit the market) - and it would constantly lose connections - and the cool looking logo light would start blinking - then poof - it was all gone - and my desktop is hard-wired. After waiting for some decent firmware for a month - and all the talk on the linksys forums of so many others having this problem - I think I threw it away - a shame to because it is gorgeous.

I know the boxes (retail) look different now - maybe it is a version 2.0 or something... regardless - that is awesome speeds you have - I am envious because my router isnt close to those speeds.

Canuck - you're upset because I said something you own is from a company known to make crappy gear - Its not a personal attack - its not a big deal - if it works for you, thats great. Most (damn near all) reputable & unbiased review/comparisons put D-Link 1 notch above the Zy-Xel or Hawking - which are the bottom feeders of the market. For the last couple of years - the top spots go to Linksys, Netgear, or ASUS - Linksys had the WRT-610N which held the top spot for a year or so, and before that the WRT54G was practically the only router to buy. The last 18 months or so the Netgear WNDR3700 has been the top-rated one, and now its a dual between the Linksys E4200 & the Netgear WNDR4500 -

Again - if you are doing well with it - then good for you

I assure you I have no brand loyalty. The D-Link DAP is only one of many networking products I own, including a WRT54GL (yep, still unmatched for 802.11g IMO), E3000, WNDR3700, Asus RT-N56U and many, many older models. I flip between routers like pairs of socks. My opinions are based solely on results, reviews and market acceptance. Never brands.

I have never, until now, heard anyone peg D-Link as a bottom feeder. I have heard complaints, but I've heard just as many for all other brands. And it varies entirely by model. For every one thing I hate about my D-Link, I can think of one thing I hate about my Asus, Linksys, Netgear, etc.

Once again, the DIR-655 (for example) consistently ranks among the highest rated/most popular wireless routers sold across sites like Newegg, NCIX, Amazon, etc. (go have a look) and the DAP-1522 as one of the most popular selling access points.

My gripe is that you walked into this thread and ragged on a brand new member, calling his post "a complete FAIL", and then you yourself contribute nothing but "D-Link sucks".

(On the matter of the E4200, they're still on rev 1.0)

Point taken.

I understand where you're coming from. You definately have a lot of good networking gear - that is true.

As far as me ragging on a brand new member and only posting "that sucks" - well ..... my only reply is, Im allowed to do that - because Im awesome !

No seriously, I see what you're saying - no sense it dragging this out - its merely a difference in preference/taste possibly.

Thanks for the input Canuck ;)

as far as the E4200 - the guy who gave me the E4200 was the VP of Linksys North America - he even gave me custom firmware that "his guys in the lab" made just for him... well it didnt help either. Honestly , I dont remember if I got ged up with it and tossed it in the trash or gave it to some unsuspecting poor sap.

ASUS RT-N56U is holding stable for a week now. BTW, the newest firmware supports 3G modems. Welcome surprise!

I now have a backup connection when my ADSL is having periods.

Lots of bad reviews of the D-Link routers on CNet. Granted way more people will rush online to complain rather than give praise, but it is what it is.

I've owned one D-Link router in the past and while it wasn't a total piece of junk, replacing it with a Linksys definitely improved the network. It was a G router, so perhaps the N flavors are better.

@Texas what you mean here "I have the WNDR3700 - and can tell you its great - fast & full of features - but it has its shortcomings (USB) -" it has a USB port on it, you can connect an external HD to it and use it anywhere in the house i know because i did it on my dads the other week.

Also the above post is that just spam?

It has a USB port, yes, but it has been plagued with issues since release (very slow write speeds, randomly unmounting, incompatibility with some 2TB+ drives, etc.)
