Specifc Data loss with RAID1?

Recommended Posts

I've run into a strange problem and there are theories abound suggesting that my RAID1 setup is the problem.

I've got a cash register program running which, inexplicably, was functioning normally throughout the entire day but did not record any transactions (logs, files, whatever) between 10AM and 4PM. Transactions were occurring normally, though, but there is no trace of them.

I think that there was a problem with the Point of Sales program. Others are suggesting that the RAID1 setup is responsible (although I don't believe the RAID or any of the drives had any problems and there was no rebuild in progress). I don't believe that a RAID issue will cause ONLY transaction data to be lost during a limited period of time.

The PC uses the Intel Matrix Storage to manage the RAID.

Does anyone have any insights which may explain this very specific data loss? Could it be the RAID that caused it?

Thanks!

Yeah I highly doubt raid would not write you log data, but all other things on the raid would still work. 10 to 4 is 6 hours I would think you would of noticed other issues if something went wrong with the raid.

And your not showing any issues with the raid now - correct?

That points to application issue then.

It sounds like an issue with the program itself. If you were having any issues outside the program you would be having all sorts of issues with everything, windows included. It also points to the program since it basically is in charge of taking stuff in ram and writing it to disk. Windows does the work but has to be told what to do. Since its a basic function that is used by everything it would be evident if it was the cause. There could be another piece of software involved however that would be causing the issue (security).

Contact the software company and ask whether this is a known problem and that you need a fix.
