Modern Warfare 3 sells 6.5M in biggest day-one ever

We all need some extra cash in the holiday season, and if you're looking for someone to hit up for a loan, we'd recommend your rich Uncle Activision. The company just announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.5 million units in the US and UK on its first day, good for $400 million. To put it in perspective, that's the biggest day-one for any entertainment product ever in history. This tops previous records set by Modern Warfare 2: a paltry $310 million and Black Ops, estimated to have made $360 million in its first day.

Of course, analysts had pre-orders pegged at roughly 9 million, so you know what that means to Battlefield 3 fans. Yes, Modern Warfare 3 is a huge disappointment falling well short of expectations. See, internet? Everybody wins!

quite the contrary, this is the engine that fuels the gaming industry. it is an industry after all, i.e needs to make money.

i'm one of those people that bought it on launch, though i only played it once since then...

that's a cliche man, COD sells quite well on all platforms it's available on. it's the biggest selling title on Steam now, so it helps Steam and thus the whole industry and economy. if you want to have a market economy you need to applaud things that sell well and get the money moving, so long as they're legal and don't really hurt anyone.

and they'll complain next week about all the piracy

lol. Probably.

Another nail in gaming's coffin. :/

I don't see how the entirety of gaming suffers because one game does exceptionally well.

Call of Duty's high sales is the reason we get pathetic games from the industry.

Yeah, this year has been full of crap

Batman AC, Deus Ex HM, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Saints row: the third, GOW3, Forza 4, AC: Revelation.

Damn you COD!

I'm really not sure why anyone's surprised? Just because something isn't as good as previous entries in a franchise doesn't mean it will sell worse. Hell, Hollywood's made a living betting on the exact opposite.

Yes , the high sales of Windows 7 made Linux suck as well. :argh:

You got it wrong mate. When games like COD MW3 get high sales, you can very well guess the trend.

heh heh well said complex...the best year in gaming by far, calling it a disappointment is really a stretch.

Calling 2011 "best year in gaming" is a stretch, I'll agree with that.

There have been several good titles this year no doubt but none of which have really taken gaming "further" in terms of content, story or complexity - most of them are either sequels or minor improvements on previous titles, in fact if you take a gander at most of them, they usually tend to "streamline" the content rather than anything else.

I don't know how big a stretch it is... it's one of the best -- if not the best -- since I've been gaming.

Yes , the high sales of Windows 7 made Linux suck as well. :argh:

But, Linux doesn't suck....

Maybe you have the delusion that it sucks because it's not Windows, but last month a variant of Linux/FreeBSD ran 8 out of 10 of the world's most reliable web servers, and I've been running it on all of my personal computers for years with no complaints from any of the family members except for when they have to use somebody else's computer that runs Windows 7.

On the original topic, I am upset with the Call of Duty franchise for a couple of reasons.

1) They made it OK for game developers to release a game before it was ready; full of bugs and inconsistencies, just so they can get patched later. Do you remember buying Super Mario 64 or Legend of Zelda OOT? Did those games have any blatantly obvious bugs like some of the Call of Duty games have had on release day? No, because they didn't have the option to fix it later, the games had to be perfect upon release. The guys behind Call of Duty seem more obsessed with getting paid as soon as possible, and slapping together patches to fix all the mistakes later. I'm not going to buy MW3 because the past couple of releases have made me hate the Call of Duty series, at least the ones for the current-gen consoles.

2) They've also made it acceptable to release games before they were ready, leaving out the unfinished content, and then selling it for an additional charge later, when the original plan was just to include it in the original game.

3) They've historically been easily hacked and modified/exploited, leading to tons of frustration from people like me who want to play fair.

yeah CoD and activision are the reaons all of this happens  you know DLC happened first with the dreamcast right? and made popular by Microsoft with Halo on the original xbox?

every dbag companies nowadays releases game before they are released, EVERYONE. what killed QA in games was internet because dev's know they can just push a patch that'll fix whatever problem they are having, also the fact games are more complicated then they have ever been.

also the original CS, which at the time was the most popular online FPS, was hacked to ****. BEFORE CoD was even out. Your comment "I am upset with the Call of Duty franchise for a couple of reasons." should read "I am upset with modern gaming for a couple of reasons."

I don't think you can expect revolutionary game play changes every year. I think some gamers have unrealistic expectations. We get awesomeness yet we still complain at every opportunity.
