TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) - Troy Police are searching for the man who shot a homeowner during an attempted robbery.

The armed would-be robber is likely to have sustained injuries of his own after the homeowner tried fighting back by hitting the gunman with a heavy-duty shovel.

It happened Thursday night as the victims, a couple in their 60s, were returning home after dining out with friends. Investigators say it's possible they were followed home from the restaurant.

As soon as the couple parked their vehicle in the garage, the gunman came in and demanded the wife's jewelry. We're told she refused and the gunman pushed her to the ground. The woman's husband grabbed a shovel and began to beat the masked man. Police say the struggle between the two men continued until they got to the front of the house where the homeowner was shot twice in his legs.

The homeowner who was shot was rushed to the hospital and is continuing to recover as police search for the masked gunman who got away in a nearby vehicle. Police say he may have had an accomplice.

In addition to the ski-mask, the suspect was reportedly wearing a sweater and dress slacks. Police say he may have bruises to his arms, back and head and could seek medical treatment for his those injuries.

Troy Police are asking that anyone with information about this crime to contact them at (248)524-3477.
