Have You Replaced Your Fat PS3's Fan?

Recommended Posts

I've found little information on it through google, youtube, amazon, and newegg. Basically mine has a 15 or 17 blade fan in it, that needs to be replaced by a 19 blade fan. Shopping options for 19 blade ps3 fans are non-existent. Any advice?

I changed mine on my fatty a while back, doesn't long just be careful when taking it all apart and remember where things go. Also give's a great chance to give it a real good clean inside, couldn't beleive how filthy mine was. My fan came with instructions on how to do it. Hardest part was re-applying the thermal paste tbh.

I have been reading up on these fans. Fans going into overdrive on the fat systems for many months now. Mainly due to Uncharted 2.

I still cannot stop the PS3 fan going into overdrive when playing Uncharted 2 after thoroughly cleaning it out. I originally stripped it all down, cleaned it all out back in April this year. First time after owning it from Christmas 2007. Very little dust was in the unit. Though the yucky looking milky thermal paste Sony has used was well and truly done. I replaced it with Arctic Silver 5. It ran well for days playing Uncharted 2 with no fan ramp up. More days later it started all over again.

There's no overheating problems which puzzles me. The fan will spin back down during Uncharted 2 after 10 - 20 minutes, and kick back into overdrive after more 10 - 25 minutes of play. I never quit the game though.

Google is covered with Uncharted 2 fan noise problems.

I recently stripped the 40GB PS3 down again this week to try and get better cooling. I tried lapping the heatsink blocks for the Cell and RSX. This time using IC Diamond and drilling holes on the back following the fan grill vents. (You can really feel the nice cool air getting drawn in and back out the rear as well as the top)

Sadly once again putting it all back together, played Uncharted 2 for a couple of hours... no fan overdrive. A few days later, instantly playing it's back to full speed soon as I start playing Uncharted 2. However, the machine is not overheating. Once the fan is on for a short while it's cool air blowing out. Once it's back to ticking over while still gaming, the system isn't really getting hot at all. It's warm but only cosy warm. I just don't understand it.

Everything on it is working splendidly and smoothly though. It's just really annoying at times having to crank up the speakers as the fan kicks into overdrive while playing Uncharted 2.

From other forums I had read others suffered the same problem and also tried replacing the 15 blade with the 19. Upon more testing with them, the 19 blade fan still kicked into overdrive with their units.

I've checked the fan even though I have the 15 blade fan. Everything is spotless, no wear, no odd sounds, no dust, nothing but a clean spotless system. I even oiled up the fan bearings just to make sure everything is easy for it.

The system is sitting on a desk well ventilated. All alone in fact.
