Or they might have tried predicting various natural mutations of H5N1 and one of the results turned out to be this crap. I'm still waiting for Alex Mercer to show up.

WTF? Why even make something like this? What is the practical use
By studying virulent bugs and modding them like they could change in nature it helps with producing vaccines and new drugs. Call it getting ahead of the game.

This is a Level 4 lab so I wouldn't be too worried as they're sealed real damned tight (been there, seen that). There are many Level 4 labs around the world, and several here in the US including the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

The labs I'd worry about the most are those that work with Ebola, Marburg etc.. Those diseases are what give most physicians the creeps; dead within days from multiple organ failure.

And then Resident Evil sounds very plausible now...

Edit: The name of the virus? T1.

Why is the news that they did it even out? It should be quietly released to the medical community after a vaccine/treatment is developed, and never officially announced. Those scientists just made themselves and their facilities targets for extremists.

All they did was modify the avion bird flu to be transmittable between ferrets...which yes means it could be contagious among humans. I dont understand the scientific value of them doing this, however seems to be alot of literature out there for and against so there is obviously some scientific value to it.

In any case I think we can all agree this is the start of the zombie apocalypse. My personal recommendation is to stack up on a sword, gun and leathers (seriously dont try to survive the apocolypse in shirts n shorts).

Having a real, live, transmissable bug to test vaccines & drugs on. Computer models don't always cut it, and someday H1N1 will do it on its own so they want to be prepared.

Just heard that the researchers and the journals Science and Nature have agreed NOT to publish details that would allow anyone to reproduce their work.

Science journal could give recipe for deadly avian flu virus

(CNN) -- A science journal is poised to publish a study that some experts believe could give a recipe to bioterrorists.

The study is from an experiment by a Dutch scientist who engineered the avian flu virus to make it more deadly to mammals by making it spread through the air.

That experiment was funded by the U.S. government, and it has sparked a passionate debate among scientists. Part of that debate is over where this research could lead, and whether it is worth it.

The National Institutes of Health and some scientists say it is worth it. They say it could ultimately protect mankind by trying to anticipate how the virus could mutate to one that causes a pandemic -- like the one in the film "Contagion."

The journal Nature just published the Wisconsin study. The journal Science is expected to publish Ron Fouchier's study within weeks.

So because American don't own it or know about it the hole world is in trouble.

I bet if it was the other way around and the US made it, no one would care.
No, I'm pretty sure if the US made it then there would be a world wide uproar. If you haven't noticed, but other countries love to hate us.
Anyways these people are stupid, and now 2012 looks like its going to have a zombie apocalypse after all.

The powers that be want to lower the human population.

more than likely they created it to better understand it and then be able to great a vaccine for this and other strains...
