What do you do when a game gets ridiculously difficult on a level?

Recommended Posts

1. I read all the guides and watch all the videos I can. I try to find other things to do in the game. But obviously this is not helping, since it's not just difficult, it's "ridiculously" difficult. You're stuck on that level. There's no other way around it. It's a bottleneck, a choke point.

2. I use cheatcodes or trainers to get through the part and remove the cheating effects afterwards. Have done this on GTA Vice City (the ambulence mission).

3. But some games don't have cheatcodes that get you past the level. This is when I start to give up. I stay away from the game for maybe three months.

4. Three months later, depending on my mood, I will uninstall it, or give it another try. Most likely I'll just uninstall it. I don't care if the game has been finished 5% or 99%. I uninstall it.

What I really don't understand is why developers allowed this to happen. They do realize we are just mortal human beings, right? Why spend time making a 5-hour game when no one can make it past the second hour?

I've got this situation at the moment with BF3. I have found myself stuck on the Iran level where you've got to take out the machine gun posts, but because I'm playing on the hardest setting it seems quite difficult. I give it a few attempts, and try going about it different ways. Then when I find myself getting bored of getting to the exact same point and dying, I quit and jump in to some MP action. I might give it a go the weekend after (since I'm only able to play on weekends these days), or maybe I'll forget about it altogether and just stick to the MP for the weekend.

In the past I've taken a look at videos of other people doing it, but only as a last resort. I find it takes away from my sense of accomplishment if I'm just copying what another guy did in a video.

Give up. Kiss my family goodbye as I have shamed them and leave home. After mulling around in the bush of Australia for 18 months on a walkabout I return to the city and start a new family and eventually make peace with my lack of gaming skill.

It has only happened 3 times so far. I like my current family.

That level was ridiculous, the enemies just kept respawning to the side and in front of you, the machine guns were easy enough just stick close to the wall and pick them off it's when you get to the 2nd MG that the enemies don't stop respawning you can point your crosshair at one point and just keep firing and they just keep running to the same point really amateurish level design they should have took more tips from MW.It really depends how I'm stuck, the final level of killzone 2 was bloody mental but I could see where I was going wrong so kept retrying till I eventually got it, If I'm stuck because I have no idea what I'm doing I'll have a look on youtube.

People actually think games these days are hard?

I'm sorry that we're not all as 1337 as you.

Although I agree that games in the past have been harder than current games, my ability to game has also diminished due to other things (work, social events, etc.). Because of that, when I do get down to play a game, I occasionally find them to be difficult. As an example, MGS4 on the hardest difficulty and trying to get the stealth rank was impossible for me on pretty much the first stage. I just didn't have the time and patience to really go for it given my limited time available to have fun.

I'll get a little frustrated, keep going at it, and eventually give up. Put the game down for a while then come back to it, and promptly complete what I was stuck on. Now I tend to just find the solution online just because I want enjoyment out of a game, if I get stuck I'm not enjoying it.

I got stuck at the first "boss" on Deus Ex:HR. The dude is overpowering and I can't figure out how to beat him. Ended up starting from scratch and following a few guides but I haven't got back to the game since BF3 and Arkham City came out. One of these days I'll give it another go lol

Take a break, try again later. It's nice that you can actually do that with today's games... I recall trying to beat Zelda II, and it was a hike (sail from one continent to the other, through the swamp where you traveled slow, through the caves in the swamp with the super accurate jumping sections, through the final castle, and then through the semi-final-boss to get to Shadow Link all on three lives and with limited magic) to get to the end, only to be beaten down every time.

Also, there are hard games out there today. Try Spacechem if you don't believe me.

Oh, cut the crap, gaming oldf--s. Yes, some games still are, especially ones where thinking is required as opposed to millisecond-precision button mashing (where they have indeed softened up a lot but I don't give a wooden nickel).

Barrett? Concussion grenades! And an upgraded assault rifle, full unload in his general direction.

On topic, I rarely have patience and will to hit the wall with my head until the wall breaks. I hate grinding. I soon drop the difficulty level if available and then, if it doesn't help (but it usually does) I use trainers, but I try to stay within the so called "Buddha mode" to avoid being spoiled too much.

Games often cheat on me anyways, like Need For Speed's ever-persistent rubberbanding AI, for example, so cheating is fair.

Aside from trying again and again, I'll watch a video of someone beating it on YouTube. If that doesn't work, then I'll lower the difficulty setting. It doesn't happen to me often though. With singleplayer games, I like to play at normal difficulty so I could enjoy the story and characters without getting frustrated. Also, I like to keep my "try pants" clean for the game's multiplayer mode.

My statement wasn't meant to insult anyone. It was more like game developers these days make their games assuming everyone who plays them are idiots.

The last game that I remember that was actually challenging to play *and* kept it's fun factor for me was Devil May Cry 3. The second mission end boss will destroy you in seconds and a lot of people complained that the learning curve for that game was shaped similar to a cliff face. But it was still fun and perseverance pays off.

On the other hand, BF3 as you mentioned. I played the entire single player campaign on hard but I did not find it hard or even challenging. Yes, I died a lot, but only until I learned where the enemies come from and where I need to position myself to kill them easily. After that it was a joke, there was no challenge and it wasn't fun, nor was it hard. It felt more tedious than anything else.

Games like Battlefield 3 try to trick people into thinking the game is hard with cheap instant deaths. But they aren't hard and all it takes is a slow irritating process of dieing over and over to learn the pre defined pattern to make it through. The difference between BF3 and DMC3 though is that no amount of learning a pattern will get you through the game, it forces you to improve your gameplay to make it through. Which is all BF3's single player was to me, learning a pattern, and one that cheats, too.

unfortunately that is the hardest boss in the game. at that point, youre still way underpowered. in my case, it took me about a dozen tries - luckily though, i had a rocket launcher and a few grenades. i busted through the door, tossed 2 grenades at his feet, then followed up w/ a rocket to the face. that was the end of him!

if you dont have the rocket launcher, then you'll have to rely on grenades and explosive barrels. from what i can tell, other guns just dont cut it.

to be honest, i dont play games for the challenge. i dont like getting frustrated. games are supposed to be an escape and a fun time. most recently, i ran through Gears of War 2 on Easy and it was a lot of fun. i dont see the point of getting stuck in games and quitting.

I'll look at a strategy guide or something, if I have to. But usually, if I keep failing at a certain point in a game, eventually I give up and walk away from it for a while. Next time I come back, I have a clear head and it's usually not nearly as bad as I thought at first. But if I am still stuck after several repeats of that scenario, I'm not above finding a video or walkthrough of the area to help me out. I don't see it as failure--I'm really good at some things, not quite so much at others. I'm OK with that... Doesn't mean I stop trying to improve, of course :D

The revolver is ridiculously overpowered in that game. Try it out.

Take a break and try again later.

I'll watch a video or read a walkthrough

Both of these

But I am stubborn so it usually take me a few attempts before I take a break. Like a boss in SWTOR I was trying to kill yesterday every time I started fighting him just before I beat him some random mob walks up and kills me or some nearby mobs respawn.

I found a spot where neither of these things would occur, job done

I will say this is an unfortunate side effect of the way modern games are designed. When you had a fixed number of enemies, it was actually fun to play the game on a harder difficulty. All of the random respawns and move forward and hope you don't get shot games make the difficulty slider somewhat pointless.
