Windows Phone 7: Another holiday season lost

Recommended Posts

Just like that, the second holiday season for Microsoft?s Windows Phone 7 platform has come and gone without the mobile OS making a name for itself. Windows Phone continues to hover somewhere in the single digits of market share despite the brand recognition offered by Nokia in its new partnership with Microsoft. With the version 7.5 Mango update, Windows Phone has become a more than capable platform, and even Android has taken some design cues from it.

So what?s the problem? With hindsight being 20/20, let?s see how Microsoft has failed to capitalize on Windows Phone 7.

That's stupid. Windows Phone has made a name everywhere as the most beautiful, elegant and innovative smartphone OS in the world.

The opening volley of ads were all based around the idea that Windows Phone was easy to use. ?Get in, get out, get on with life,? was the tagline. It?s a nice idea, but it completely misses the psychology of the average smartphone user.

People really don?t like to be told something it too complicated for them, even if it is. The implicit tone of Microsoft?s original ads might as well have been, ?Here?s a phone that?s easy enough for you to use, dummy.? The ads completely ignore the fact that smartphone users often have their noses buried in a screen because they like using the device, not because they have no choice.

This is totally true with wp7

No one has announced any sales figures for the holiday season considering it's technically not over yet.

But at least here in the UK, most people I've come across are aware generally of the Lumia name now. They might not be aware that it has anything to do with Microsoft or Windows Phone, but there's some definite awareness building up that wasn't there before, and assuming Nokia can pull out both extremely cheap and cheerful low end devices and a nice "superphone" device early next year, I can easily see things getting better marketshare-wise thanks majorly to the Nokia name and advertising.

If Microsoft's advertising contractors didn't suck so much we'd be in a much better place by now. One campaign by Nokia, and it's already done more work then Microsoft have managed in the OS's entire lifetime - though probably helped by the fact that there's little mention of "Windows" or "Microsoft" in their advertising anyway :p

Technically Google and Apple did report their activation numbers for the holiday. It's on the Front Page. Stop by the front page sometime. It's nice in here.

There's no Nokia, or Samsung, HTC, LG etc sales numbers, let alone numbers for platform specifics so what he said holds true. And don't android and iOS activations cover not just phones at this point? The numbers are big, no surprise, Good for them.

That's true. But we all know that Android Tablets are not selling in large volumes like the iPad. Android forks such as the Kindle Fire and Nook (Touch, Color and Tablet) are not counted as part of the Android Activation. Those Android forks are selling quite well too because of price. At least for Android, those numbers will mostly be just phones.

There are no sales number from any company.

Lumia 800 is said to be selling extremely well but no numbers yet, so please don't post these kind of things

seriously?? How about you not posting these kind of comments anywhere??

Its an article and you have no right to say someone not to post it just because you didnt like it.

How about this? there is no official number about WP7 because it have made no big impact!!

There were a lot of Nokia Lumia roadshows here before Christmas, in a place where the iPhone has a huge grip on the market. I'm on the train every day where almost everyone is using a smartphone. With rough figures, I'd say that approximately 80% of devices are iPhones with the other 20% being made of up various Android phones. Sadly for the Nokia marketing people, it seems the only thing people were stopping by for was Fruit Ninja on the Kinect...

I haven't yet seen a Lumia in the wild.

you should, if they arent many user, the apps developers will stay away or update less frequently b/c there isnt much money to be made on this platform. that does affect you.

I see what you are saying to a point. It's like if Android fell to the number two position and iOS took number one, why would I care what other people think as long as Google and the manufacturers keep delivering in something I like? But here is the thing, my analogy was talking about phones that are super popular (the market share reflects that). The problem with what you are saying is that you want other people to care and buy it so that Microsoft can continue on this. Why would Microsoft continue to spend so much money on R&D, advertising, developers and deals when the market share numbers are not breaking single digit market share? Microsoft is going on their second year with this phone.

If the trend continues, what do you think will happen to Windows Phone?

I did actually mean "no one has announced <Windows Phone> sales figures", not "no one has released sales figures for anything"... And it had little to do with my point :p

seriously, five years ago everyone was whining about non-standard approach of Microsoft and liked how "open" web is.

Today, everyone wants ****ing apps for simple websites. This is beyond stupid. Most apps that people need are already on WP7. It lacks on games front, but even then most stupid games that most people play are already on here.

Wow, why don't you just buy a "dumb" phone then? You'll have better battery life. I hope you are not paying more than $15 for the data plan because you are just getting ripped off for your use of this smartphone.

Sometimes I wonder if MS is waiting for Windows 8 to heavily promote their phones. They would get people use to using tiles and they would eventually want the same on their phones.

Not according to the market share it hasn't, and market share is what's important.

During this holiday season, what made a name for itself (or contnued to do so) is iPad, iPhone, Android Phones, Kindle Fire (Android Fork), Nook Tablet/Color (Android Fork). No where did I hear people mention Windows Phone.

Funny because Win Phone 7 has sold more than Android did in it's 1st full year.

Looking at Europe, the Nokia Lumia 800 is flying off the shelves.

Long story short, Your a Troll and you are an epic failure.

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

Man, that line says it all. Any MS ad I've EVER seen is about as dumb as dumb can be! Half the time I find myself looking around with a look of what the f**k was that ad even advertising?
