MS Access Security Workgroups

I've inherited an MS Access database that makes use of an MDW workgroup file. I've been asked to begin maintaining users on this file but somewhere along the line I seem to have made a misstep, as now I'm unable to access the file at all.

Using the (no longer with the company) creator's login and password, I was able to run Workgroup Administrator, join the workgroup, and edit user accounts. I created an account for a new user but was not able to actually login as that user. When I went back into the user list, his account was still present with the group memberships I'd assigned him but the database was still refusing to accept his login.

Somewhere along the line something went sour because now I'm not able to even open the MDB file. I've tried opening it "raw," opening it after having joined the workgroup, and opening it via a shortcut with the workgroup pre-specified.

Holding Shift while opening the file does not work. All I see is "You do not have the necessary permissions to use the (path to file) object. Have your system administrator (gee, that's me) or the person who created this object (who don't work here no' mo') establish the appropriate permissions for you."

Any thoughts on how to get around this? I'd run the damn thing through a password cracker but that wouldn't help because it's failing before I'm even presented with a login.

Okay, I think I figured out what I did wrong with regard to no password prompt. I had cleared the password from Admin but forgot to set a new one, and according to this thread that results in a (failed) auto-Admin-login attempt.

I'm back to having a login prompt but have not yet figured out why my new user accounts aren't taking hold.

I'm a dipsh*t.

It would really, really help if I had typed my desired passwords for the new users in the password fields under "Change Logon Password" instead of the User ID field.

Fixed, but I'm leaving this glowing testament to my flakiness up here for the next person who comes along with Access files dumped in their lap.
